Valve Clearance: Adjustments
The DOHC engine is not equipped with rocker arms. Valve adjustment is performed by using selective shims. Measure valve lash when engine is cold.1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove cylinder head cover and camshafts as described in CYLINDER HEAD COVER and CAMSHAFT.
3. Remove selective shims and tappets. Be sure to arrange shims and tappets in order of removal to ensure proper installation.
4. Valve lash adjustment must be done while engine is cold. Use Valve Lash Spring Spacer tool Nos. J 38413-2 (left) and J 38413-3 (right) or equivalent to make adjustments.
5. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC, then align crankshaft pulley to 0 mark on the timing cover.
6. Ensure valves on No. 1 cylinder have play and valves on No. 4 cylinder do not have play. If valves are not set as above, rotate crankshaft pulley 360° and align with 0 mark on timing cover, then recheck valves.
7. Measure and record valve lash between cam lobe and selective shim as follows:
a. On No. 1 cylinder, intake and exhaust valves.
b. On No. 2 cylinder, intake valves.
c. On No. 3 cylinder, exhaust valves.
8. Rotate crankshaft pulley 360° and ensure that rear camshaft bearing caps are removed so that selective shims may be removed.
9. Measure and record valve lash between cam lobe and selective shim as follows:
a. On No. 4 cylinder, intake and exhaust valves.
b. On No. 3 cylinder, intake valves.
c. On No. 2 cylinder, exhaust valves.

10. Valve clearance on the exhaust valve must be between 0.008-0.012 inch. If clearance is not as specified, replace shim by turning the camshaft lobe downward and inserting tool, J 38413-2 (Left) or J 38413-3 (Right) between camshaft journal and the cam lobe next to selective shim. Turn cam lobe upward and remove selective shim, Fig. 15 and 16.
11. Refer to Fig. 17, for available exhaust shims.
12. Valve clearance on the intake valve must be between 0.004-0.008 inch. If clearance is not as specified, replace shim by turning the camshaft lobe downward and inserting tool, J 38413-2 (Left) or J 38413-3 (Right) between camshaft journal and the cam lobe next to selective shim. Turn cam lobe upward and remove selective shim.
13. Refer to Fig. 17, for available intake shims.
14. Install cylinder head cover.
