Oil Pump: Service and Repair

EXCEPT 16 VALVE ENGINE

1. Remove Nos. 1, 2 and 3 timing belt covers as described previously.
2. Remove oil pan attaching bolts, then the oil pan.
3. Remove righthand undercover.
4. Remove flywheel cover and crankshaft pulley.
5. Mark position of camshaft and crankshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rotational direction.
6. Loosen idler pulley bolt, move pulley over to relieve belt tension and tighten bolt.
7. Pull timing belt off of crankshaft timing pulley.
8. Remove dipstick tube.
9. Remove timing belt idler pulley.
10. Remove oil pump bolts and oil pump.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between the driven gear and body, Fig. 45.
b. If clearance is greater than .008 inch, replace gear and/or body.
c. Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between both gear tips and crescent as shown in Fig. 46.
d. If clearance is greater than .0138 inch, replace gear and/or body.
e. Using a feeler gauge and flat block, measure side clearance as shown in Fig. 47.
f. If clearance is greater than .004 inch, replace gear and/or body.

16 VALVE ENGINE

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove timing belt as outlined under TIMING BELT COVER and TIMING BELT & CAMSHAFT TIMING PULLEY.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove crankshaft timing gear pulley.
5. Remove oil pan as outlined under OIL PAN.
6. Remove oil pump bolts and oil pump assembly.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using feeler gauge, measure driven gear to housing clearance, Fig. 48. If clearance is greater than .0078 inch, replace the oil pump.
b. Using feeler gauge, measure drive gear to driven gear clearance, Fig. 49. If clearance is greater than .0012 inch, replace the gear set.
c. Using feeler gauge, measure oil pump body to gear clearance, Fig. 50. If clearance is greater than .004 inch replace the oil pump.
