Removal
NOTICE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: The Boss(R) 302 requires Motorcraft(R) SAE 5W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, all other 5.0L (4V) engines require Motorcraft(R) SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil.
All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Remove the 2 steering column dash boot nuts.
4. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter(R) 28-75-1 or equivalent).
Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
5. NOTE: Base 5.0L (4V) vehicle shown, Boss(R) 302 similar.
If equipped, remove the 4 nuts and the strut tower cross brace.
6. NOTE: The engine appearance cover rubber grommets may remain on the cover. If so, remove the grommets from the cover and install them on the intake manifold before installing the cover.
If equipped, remove the engine appearance cover.
7. Remove the ACL (Air Cleaner) outlet pipe.
8. Remove the bolt and position the sound enhancement pipe aside.
9. Remove the 8 pin-type retainers and the upper radiator sight shield.
10. Install an Engine Lifting Bracket on the rear of the RH cylinder head.
11. NOTE: It may be necessary to install washers between the Engine Lifting Bracket and the cylinder head to prevent the Engine Lifting Bracket from contacting the valve cover while supporting the engine.
Install an Engine Lifting Bracket on the side of the LH cylinder head.
All vehicles except Boss(R) 302
12. NOTE: The draw screw and bracket from the heavy duty Engine Support Bar (303-F070) must be used with the light duty Engine Support Bar (303-F072). This will provide enough clearance between the draw screw bracket and the cowl.
Install the Engine Support Bar.
Boss(R) 302 vehicles
13. Detach the wiring harness retainer and the hood release cable retainer from the radiator support.
- Position the wiring harness and hood release cable aside.
14. NOTE: The heavy duty Engine Support Bar (303-F070) must be used with the draw screw from the light duty Engine Support Bar (303-F072) in the rearward position. This will provide enough clearance between the intake manifold and the Engine Support Bar, and enough clearance between the draw screw and the vehicle hood.
Install the Engine Support Bar.
All vehicles
15. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
Remove the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts.
16. Using the Engine Support Bar, raise the engine 25 mm (0.984 in).
17. Remove the 9 screws and the lower radiator sight shield.
18. Remove the crossmember brace.
19. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil.
- Install the drain plug and tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
20. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
21. Remove the 2 nuts and detach the wiring harness retainers from the LH side of the oil pan and the front oil pan stud bolts.
22. Detach the wiring harness retainers from the RH side of the oil pan and the RH engine support insulator bracket stud bolt.
23. Detach the wiring harness retainers from A/C compressor stud bolt and the RH side of the oil pan.
24. Remove the bolt and position the steering intermediate shaft aside.
25. Remove the 4 nuts (2 shown) and the front crossmember brace.
26. NOTE: RH bolts shown, other fasteners similar.
Mark the position of the 4 subframe nuts and 4 subframe bolts for referencing during assembly
27. Position 2 adjustable jackstands under the subframe.
28. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Remove the 4 rear subframe bolts.
29. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Remove the 4 front subframe nuts.
30. Using the adjustable jackstands, lower the subframe 100 mm (3.937 in).
31. Remove the 3 stud bolts, the 13 bolts and the oil pan.
32. Remove the 3 bolts and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
- Remove and discard the O-ring seal.
33. Remove and inspect the oil pan baffle and gasket, replace as necessary.
