Output Shaft Seal
Removal
All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.
2. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
3. Remove the 4 transmission crossmember bolts and the 3 transmission support insulator bolts and remove transmission support insulator and crossmember.
Vehicles equipped with a 5.0L (4V) engine
4. NOTE: The driveshaft center bearing is spaced from the body by 2 washers that will fall off of the bearing when the bolts are removed.
Remove and discard the 2 driveshaft center bearing bolts and position the driveshaft aside.
All vehicles
5. Index mark the driveshaft flange to the output shaft flange, remove and discard the 4 bolts and position the driveshaft aside.
6. Remove the output shaft flange bolt.
7. Using the 2 or 3 Jaw Puller and the Step Plate, remove the output shaft flange.
8. Using a suitable tool, remove and discard the output shaft seal.
Installation
All vehicles
1. Assemble the Handle and the Rear Seal Installer and install a new seal on the Rear Seal Installer.
2. Using the Handle and the Rear Seal Installer, install a new seal.
3. Using the Synchro Gear Pack Installer and the Rear Flange Installer, install the output shaft flange.
4. Install the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Tool and the Rear Flange Holding Tool on the output shaft flange. Clean the threads on the output shaft bolt and apply one dot of Threadlock 262 to the lower end of the output shaft bolt threads. Using the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Tool and the Rear Flange Holding Tool, install the output shaft flange bolt. Tighten the output shaft flange bolt in 3 stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft).
- Stage 2: Loosen the output shaft flange bolt.
- Stage 3: Tighten to 180 Nm (133 lb-ft).
5. Align the index marks made during removal on the driveshaft flange to the output shaft flange and install 4 new driveshaft flange bolts.
- Tighten in a cross pattern to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
Vehicles equipped with a 5.0L (4V) engine
6. NOTE: The center bearing spacers must be installed between the body and the center bearing bracket.
Install the 2 driveshaft center bearing spacers on the center bearing, position the driveshaft in place and install 2 new driveshaft center bearing bolts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
All vehicles
7. Position the transmission support insulator and crossmember in place, install the 3 transmission support insulator bolts and install the 4 transmission crossmember bolts.
1. Tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
2. Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
