AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION GRIND/RATTLE
NOISE - BUILT ON OR AFTER 1/13/2011 THROUGH
3/17/2011

2011 Fiesta
This article supersedes TSB 11-7-16 to update the Parts List.
ISSUE
Some 2011 Fiesta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, and built on or after 1/13/2011 through 3/17/2011, may exhibit a grind/rattle noise in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and/or 5th gear.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-11.
2. Remove the dual clutch as an assembly from transaxle. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.
3. Remove the Z-washers from the engagement system bearing unit.
4. Remove and discard the engagement system bearing unit.
5. Install new engagement bearing system unit.
6. Reinstall the Z-washers onto engagement system bearing unit and center them correctly.
NOTE
FAILURE TO CENTER Z-WASHERS CORRECTLY MAY RESULT IN RATTLE NOISE.
NOTE
DO NOT TILT TRANSAXLE AFTER THE Z-WASHERS ARE INSTALLED, THEY MAY COME OFF CENTER AND DAMAGE CAN OCCUR.
7. Reinstall the dual clutch assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.
NOTE
DUAL CLUTCH SELF ADJUSTER LOCKS MUST BE RELEASED BEFORE TRANSMISSION IS INSTALLED OR DUAL CLUTCH WILL NOT OPERATE.
8. Install the transaxle assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.
9. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) and transmission control module (TCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 73.01 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2011.3 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.
NOTE
THE PCM AND TCM ARE A MATCHED SET. PROGRAMMING THE PCM WILL AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE THE TCM.
NOTE
SOME VEHICLES MAY ALREADY BE AT THE LATEST LEVEL CALIBRATION.
10. Using IDS, select Powertrain, Transmission, Clutch system test, complete procedure.
11. Using IDS, select Powertrain, Transmission, Transmission Adaptive Learning and perform each of the following.
a. Transmission Range Sensor Adaptive Learning
b. Shift Drum Adaptive Learning
c. Clutch Adaptive Learning
d. Exit
12. Perform Adaptive Drive Cycle. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.
NOTE
FAILURE TO PERFORM ALL STEPS OF THE ADAPTIVE LEARNING ROUTINES AND THE DRIVE CYCLE MAY RESULT IN ERRATIC SHIFTS AND DRIVEABILITY CONCERNS
