Attachment III - Technical Information

OVERVIEW
This program involves inspecting the defroster vents for foam stuffers, installing them if they are not present and reprogramming the PCM.

INSPECTION

1. Using a suitable light, look through the windshield into the defroster vent grille openings. Inspect for dark gray foam stuffer in the LH and RH defroster vent grille opening as indicated in Figure 1.

2. If the dark gray stuffers are already in both the LH and RH defroster vent grille openings, proceed to PCM Programming in this attachment. See Figure 2.

3. NOTE: The stuffer clips shown in Figure 2 may or may not be present on vehicles that already have foam stuffers from the plant. Some of the stuffers that were installed at the plant were retained with staples instead of clips. It is not necessary to install the stuffer clips on vehicles that do not have them.

If the dark gray foam stuffers are not present in the defroster vent grille openings, proceed to Step 1 of the Service procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE:
The parts kit for this repair contains one extra foam stuffer and one extra stuffer clip. Only 2 foam stuffers and 4 stuffer clips need to be installed to complete this repair.

WARNING:
BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP THE STUFFER CLIPS INTO THE DEFROSTER VENTS. RETRIEVING THE CLIPS MAY REQUIRE REMOVAL OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.

1. Locate the second inside vane of the LH and RH defroster vent grilles. Using a suitable magnetic tool, position a stuffer clip on the LH and RH defroster vent grille vanes. Using slight pressure, securely position the clips onto the vanes. See Figure 3. Also see Figure 1 for an overview of the final installation configuration.

2. Holding one end of the dark gray foam stuffer, twist the other end to create approximately a 1/2 in (13 mm) diameter rope style look to the foam stuffer. This is necessary to position the foam stuffer into the defroster vent grille opening. See Figure 4.

3. While holding the foam stuffer in the rope style position, twist and feed the foam stuffers into the outermost opening of the center defroster vent grille, directing the foam stuffers outward toward the LH or RH defroster vent grilles. See Figure 5.

4. NOTE: Care must be taken not to tear or rip the foam stuffer.

It will be necessary to use a suitable tool to finish feeding the foam stuffer into the defroster vent grilles and to position the foam stuffer up against the installed clip in the LH and RH defroster vent grilles. See Figure 6.

5. NOTE: It is important to have the dark gray foam stuffer centered between the installed clips. Once installed, the foam will expand back to its original size.

Using a suitable magnetic tool, position stuffer clips on the (2) outermost center defroster vent grille vanes. With the clips tipped slightly back toward you, use slight pressure to securely position the clips onto the defroster vent grille vane. If the clips are not angled back slightly during installation they will not seat properly due to the duct design angle. See Figure 7.

PCM PROGRAMMING

1. Verify that the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) is updated to software release 52.3 or later.

2. Reprogram the PCM to the latest level using IDS. If you are unable to reprogram the PCM:

^ The module replacement will not be covered underthis program, and

^ Prior to disconnecting the scan tool and closing the session, call the Special Service Support Center for further instructions.
