REAR BUMPER COVER NOT RETAINED ALONG QUARTER PANEL
FORD:
2008 Focus
ISSUE
Some 2008 Focus vehicles may exhibit the rear bumper cover unfastened near the rear quarter panels. This may be due to the bumper cover not being fully attached to the bumper cover reinforcements.
ACTION
Follow the service procedure to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Bumper Cover Reinforcement - Not Damaged
1. Loosen the remainder of the bumper from the bumper cover reinforcement on the side that is becoming detached. (Figure 1)
2. Inspect bumper cover reinforcements for broken fasteners. If any damage is present, the reinforcements must be replaced - proceed to Bumper Cover Reinforcement - Replacement Required.
3. If no damage is found, apply a mild soap and water solution to the bumper cover reinforcements and bumper cover to aid in reattachment.
4. Reattach the bumper starting from the tail lamp, working forward until the bumper cover is properly fastened and snapped into place.
NOTE
DO NOT PROCEED UNLESS THE BUMPER COVER CANNOT BE REATTACHED USING THE ABOVE METHOD.
Bumper Cover Reinforcement - Replacement Required
1. Remove bumper cover and both bumper cover reinforcements per Workshop Manual, Section 501-19.
2. Remove the four metal inserts from the sheet metal where original screws were fastened.
3. Install new bumper cover reinforcements to the bumper cover. The new bumper cover reinforcements have been redesigned. (Figure 2)
4. Install bumper cover with attached reinforcements to vehicle per Workshop Manual, Section 501-19. Torque nuts to 35 lb-in (4 N.m).
