Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION

Deactivation

WARNING:
- Always wear eye protection when servicing a vehicle. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
- Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, safety canopy or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
- To reduce the risk of accidental deployment, do not use any memory saver devices. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death.

NOTE:
- The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the restraints control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
- The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
3. At the smart junction box (SJB), located below the LH side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the RCM fuse 32 (10A) from the SJB.
4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag indicator does not remain lit continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding.
5. Turn the ignition OFF.

6. WARNING: Always deplete the backup power supply before repairing or installing any new front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) component and before servicing, removing, installing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side impact sensors or the restraints control module (RCM). Nearby components include doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

Refer to the Description and Operation portion of Air Bag Systems for location of the RCM and impact sensor(s).

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least 1 minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

7. NOTE: Turn the steering wheel to gain access to each of the 3 driver air bag module attachment pin bores.

Working from the back of the steering wheel, insert a screwdriver into the driver air bag module attachment pin bore.

Rotate the screwdriver to release the driver air bag module attachment pin from the spring retainer.
- Repeat this step for the remaining 2 driver air bag module attachment pins.

8. CAUTION: Do not allow the driver air bag module to hang from the wiring harness. Damage to the wiring harness and connectors may occur.

Disconnect the horn switch electrical connector.

9. CAUTION: Do not allow the driver air bag module to hang from the wiring harness. Damage to the wiring harness and connectors may occur.

Disconnect the driver air bag module connectors.

10. Remove the driver air bag module.
11. Open and lower the glove compartment door.

12. NOTE: The passenger air bag module electrical connector is located below the passenger air bag module.

Disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

13. From under the front of the driver seat, disconnect the seat-to-floor electrical connector.
14. From under the front of the passenger seat, disconnect the seat-to-floor electrical connector.
15. Unlatch and fold the rear seats down.

16. NOTE: Two-door shown, 4-door similar.

Remove the LH and RH C-pillar trim panel retainer access covers.
- Remove the C-pillar trim panel screw covers.
- Remove the screw and remove the C-pillar trim panels.

17. NOTE: Two-door shown, 4-door similar.

Remove the LH and RH rear seat belt retractor trim covers from the quarter trim panel.

18. Remove the pin-type retainers and position the parcel shelf aside.

19. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Disconnect the LH and RH side air curtain module (yellow) electrical connectors.

20. Install the RCM fuse 32 (10A) to the SJB.
21. Connect the battery ground cable.

Reactivation
1. Remove the RCM fuse 32 (10A) from the SJB.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

3. CAUTION: Do not allow the driver air bag module to hang from the wiring harness. Damage to the wiring harness and connectors may occur.

Connect the horn switch connector.

4. CAUTION: Do not allow the driver air bag module to hang from the wiring harness. Damage to the wiring harness and connectors may occur.

Connect the driver air bag module connectors.

5. Install the driver air bag module to the steering wheel.

6. NOTE: The passenger air bag module electrical connector is located below the passenger air bag module.

Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

7. Close the glove compartment door.
8. From under the front of the driver seat, connect the seat-to-floor connector.
9. From under the front of the passenger seat, connect the seat-to-floor connector.

10. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Connect the LH and RH side air curtain module (yellow) electrical connectors.

11. NOTE: Two-door shown, 4-door similar.

Install the LH and RH rear seat belt retractor trim covers to the quarter trim panel.

12. NOTE: Two-door shown, 4-door similar.

Install the LH and RH C-pillar trim panels, screws and access covers.

13. Position the parcel shelf 2 pin-type retainers.
14. Fold the rear seats up.
15. Install the RCM fuse 32 (10A) to the SJB.
16. Connect the battery ground cable.
17. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.

18. WARNING: Make sure no one is in the vehicle and there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any air bag module when the battery is connected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

Connect the battery ground cable.

19. Prove out the SRS as follows:

Turn the ignition switch from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the switch back to ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turn off. If an air bag SRS fault is present, the air bag indicator will:
- fail to light.
- remain lit continuously.
- flash at a 5 Hz rate (RCM not configured).

The air bag indicator may not illuminate until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the RCM to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator and any SRS fault discovered must be diagnosed and repaired.

Clear all continuous DTCs from the RCM and occupant classification system module (OCSM) using a scan tool.
