Principles of Operation
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATIONDoor Ajar Indicator Lamp and Chime
The door ajar indicator lamp and chime feature is controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM). The driver and passenger door ajar switches (and liftgate [wagon only]) are hard-wired to the GEM. If any door is sensed open, the instrument cluster processes the input, illuminates the door ajar indicator and sends a tone request signal to the GEM which sounds the chime.
Low Fuel Warning Chime
The instrument cluster sends the GEM a tone request which activates the chime when the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position and the fuel level is less than 15% of tank capacity.
Safety Belt Warning Chime
The seat belt tone request is transmitted over the communication network to the cluster from the restraint control module (RCM). The safety belt switches are hard-wired to the RCM. The instrument cluster sends a tone request to the GEM which sounds the chime.
Headlamps On Warning Chime
The headlamps on warning chime feature is controlled by the GEM. The headlamp and ignition switches are monitored by the GEM. If the headlamps are on and the ignition switch is OFF, the GEM processes the input and sounds the chime.
Key-In-Ignition Warning Chime
The key-in-ignition warning chime feature is controlled by the GEM. The ignition switch and the driver door ajar switch are monitored by the GEM. If the key-in-ignition is sensed and the driver door is open, the GEM processes these inputs and sounds the chime.
Turn Signal Warning Chime
The turn signal warning chime feature is controlled by the GEM. The turn signal switch is monitored by the GEM. When the GEM senses that the turn signal switch is activated, the GEM supplies voltage to the multifunction switch, sounding the chime.
Air Bag Warning Chime
The instrument cluster sends the GEM a tone request which activates the chime when the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position, the air bag indicator is inoperable, the air bag system status (air bag system failed) message is sent, or 15 seconds have elapsed since the ignition switch position was in RUN or START and the air bag system status message is not received.
