Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair
Selector Lever CableSelector Lever Cable:
Removal
All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
Vehicles with 2.3L (PZEV) engine
2. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to Battery.
Vehicles with 2.0L Zetec-E (Zetec) engine
3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
4. Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.
All vehicles
5. CAUTION: Excessive bending of the flexible exhaust pipe may cause damage resulting in failure. Support the flexible exhaust pipe with a support wrap or suitable splint.
Support the flexible exhaust pipe, using a suitable wrap.
6. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe and detach the support isolators.
^ Discard the gasket.
7. Disconnect the center exhaust hanger and support the exhaust with wire.
8. Remove the exhaust heat shield.
^ Unclip the selector lever cable.
9. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the selector lever bracket and manual control lever.
1 Disconnect the shift cable end from the manual control lever.
2 Depress the tabs on the shift cable and remove the cable from the bracket.
10. Remove the floor console. For additional information, refer to Console.
11. Remove the selector lever cable from the selector lever.
1 Shift the selector lever to "P".
2 Unclip the selector lever cable.
3 Unclip the selector lever cable outer sleeve.
12. Remove the center armrest brace.
13. NOTE: LH side shown.
Remove the center console lower trim panels.
^ Remove the screws.
^ Release the clip.
14. Remove the footwell heater channel.
15. NOTE: RH side shown.
Remove the heater housing cover.
^ Unclip the 4 clips.
^ Remove the 2 screws.
16. NOTE: Heat exchanger shown removed.
Detach the floor covering and the insulator material and position it aside.
17. Attach a suitable length of draw cord to the transaxle end of the selector lever cable and secure it to the transaxle.
18. Remove the selector lever cable grommet nuts and the grommet.
19. Remove the selector lever cable.
^ Pull the cable and draw cord through the floor panel.
Installation
All vehicles
1. Attach the draw cord to the transaxle end of the selector lever cable.
2. Pull the selector lever cable through the floor pane.
3. Install the selector lever cable grommet and nuts.
^ Tighten to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
4. NOTE: Heat exchanger shown removed.
Secure the insulator material and the floor covering with adhesive tape.
5. NOTE: RH side shown.
Install the heater housing cover.
^ Locate the 4 clips.
^ Install the 2 screws.
6. Install the footwell heater channel.
7. NOTE: LH side shown.
Install the center console lower trim panels.
^ Install the clip.
^ Install the screws.
8. Install the armrest brace.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
9. Install the selector cable to the selector lever.
1 Shift the selector lever to "P".
2 Clip in the selector lever cable outer sleeve.
3 Clip in the selector lever cable.
10. Install the floor console. For additional information, refer to Console.
11. Remove the draw cord.
12. Unlock the shift cable end. Make sure that the cable end moves freely.
13. Connect the shift cable end to the manual control lever.
1 Connect the shift cable to the cable bracket.
2 Connect the shift cable end to the manual control lever.
14. Press the lock tab down to secure the cable end from moving.
15. Install the exhaust heat shield.
16. Connect the center exhaust hanger and remove the support wire.
17. NOTE: Install a new exhaust flange gasket.
Attach the exhaust pipe support insulators and connect the front exhaust pipe.
^ Tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
18. Remove the support wrap.
19. Adjust the selector lever cable.
Vehicles with 2.0L Zetec-E (Zeta) engine
20. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
21. Install the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.
Vehicles with 2.3L (PZEV) engine
22. Install the battery tray. For additional information, refer to Battery.
23. Check that the vehicle starts in PARK and NEUTRAL and the reverse lamps illuminate in REVERSE.
