Removal and Installation

1. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.

Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

2. WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, notes and instructions in the deactivation procedure.

Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
3. Remove the 4 bolts, release the fasteners and position aside the instrument lower panel.
^ To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
4. Disconnect the hood release cable and the data link connector (DLC) from the instrument panel lower panel and remove the instrument panel lower panel.
^ Loosen the hood release cable nut.
^ To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
5. Remove the steering column upper shroud.
^ Using a suitable tool, release the 2 clips (one each side).





6. If equipped, remove the audio control switch.
^ Using a suitable tool, release the locking tang.
^ Disconnect the audio control switch electrical connector.
7. Remove the steering column lower shroud.
1 If equipped, release the steering column locking lever.
2 Remove the 3 screws.





8. Disconnect the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transceiver, RH multi-function switch and clockspring electrical connectors.





9. Disconnect the ignition switch and LH multi-function switch electrical connectors.
10. Release the locating pin disconnect the wiring harness from the steering column.

11. CAUTION: Install a new steering column shaft coupling bolt.

Remove the bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft coupling from the steering gear pinion extension.
^ To install, tighten to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
12. Remove and discard the 3 steering column nuts.
^ To install, tighten to 13 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).
13. Remove the bolt and the steering column.
^ To install, tighten to 13 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).

14. WARNING: When installing the steering column, make sure new nuts are installed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION: Make sure the road wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
15. Repower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
