Removal
TransmissionNOTE: If the transmission is to be removed for a period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block.
1. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected or a new battery installed, certain transmission operating parameters can be lost. The powertrain control module (PCM) must relearn these parameters. During this learning process, you may experience slightly firm shifts, delayed, or early shifts. This operation is considered normal and will not affect the function of the transmission. Normal operation will return once these parameters are stored by the PCM.
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the complete exhaust system and the heat shield.
4. CAUTION: Index-mark (color paint) the bolts, washers, nuts, and the flex coupling to the transmission flange and the pinion flange to make sure they are installed in the same location. Components not assembled in their original locations can cause driveshaft imbalance.
CAUTION: Do not remove the bolts retaining the flex coupling to the driveshaft.
Index-mark the front driveshaft companion flange. Remove the three nuts, washers and bolts.
5. Slide the front driveshaft assembly rearward and support.
6. If transmission disassembly is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
7. Remove the H02S sensor connector from the front of the transmission pan rail.
8. WARNING: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
Support the transmission with a transmission jack
9. Remove the transmission support center bolt.
10. Remove the transmission support.
11. Disconnect the shift cable from the transmission support.
12. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever.
13. Remove the shift cable bracket.
14. Disconnect the wire harness from the top of the transmission shift cable bracket.
15. Lower the transmission enough to gain access to the sensors. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor, output shaft speed (OSS) sensor and intermediate shaft speed (ISS) sensor electrical connectors.
16. NOTE: Clean the area around connector to prevent contamination of the solenoid body connector.
Disconnect the transmission connector.
17. Disconnect the harness retainers.
18. Remove and discard the tie strap from the digital TR sensor connector boot.
19. Slide the rubber boot back and disconnect the digital TR sensor connector.
20. Remove the screws and pushpin then remove the splash shield.
21. Disconnect the wire harness from the cooler line bracket.
22. Disconnect the transmission cooler line bracket.
23. CAUTION: Do not damage the cooler tubes.
Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes.
24. Remove the access cover.
25. NOTE: Make an identifying mark on the nut, stud and adapter plate to allow for correct installation.
Remove eight retaining nuts.
26. Remove the bolts.
27. While lowering the transmission from the vehicle, disconnect the harness from the top of the transmission.
28. Backflush and clean the transmission fluid cooler.
