DISASSEMBLY

WARNING:
^ ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG MODULE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
^ AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE AIR BAG SURFACE CAN CONTAIN DEPOSITS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A PRODUCT OF THE GAS GENERANT COMBUSTION THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
^ NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE PRETENSIONER AND SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR PRETENSIONER ARE PYROTECHNIC DEVICES. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG EQUIPPED VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING A SAFETY BELT BUCKLE PRETENSIONER OR SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR PRETENSIONER.


NOTE:
^ Driver seat is shown, passenger seat is similar.
^ For information on passenger seat LATCH bar removal and installation, refer to Seat Belt Systems.

1. Prepare the vehicle for seat backrest disassembly.
1 Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.

PLEASE REFER TO COMPONENT OR SYSTEM TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS.

THE SIDE IMPACT SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.

TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).


2 Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.

3 Remove the seat from the vehicle.

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SEAT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.

2. Remove the front cushion side shield.







3. Pressing the release button, pull the head restraint from the seat.
4. Remove the seat backrest.







5. Remove the safety belt guide screw cover.







6. Remove the two screws.







7. Release the backrest upholstery J-clip.







8. Separate the hook and loop fasteners that attach the upholstery to the backrest cushion. Remove the upholstery.

CAUTION: Use care when separating the backrest upholstery from the hook and loop fasteners to avoid tearing the fastener off the seat foam.







9. Remove and discard the hog rings. Remove the backrest cushion.







10. Release the side air bag module electrical harness from the seat frame.
^ To aid installation, mark the electrical harness-to-seat frame attachment points.







11. Remove the two side air bag module nuts.







12. Pull down on the lower rung of the lumbar basket to release the basket from the backrest frame. Remove the basket from the backrest frame.







13. Mark the inboard and outboard head restraint guides. Squeeze together the bottom end of the head restraint guide. Push the guide through backrest frame tube to remove.

NOTE: The inboard and outboard bead restraint guides are not interchangeable.

ASSEMBLY

WARNING:
^ TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, AND NOTES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE.
^ INSPECT THE MOUNTING SURFACES OF THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE AND THE SEAT BACK FRAME MOUNTING BRACKET FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
^ INSPECT THE SIDE AIR BAG CAVITY IN THE SEAT BACK PAD FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
^ BEFORE INSTALLING THE AIR BAG MODULE, CHECK IT FOR DAMAGE AND FOREIGN OBJECTS. IF THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE, CHECK IT FOR DAMAGE AND FOREIGN. IF THE AIR BAG MODULE IS DAMAGED, REPLACE IT. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
^ IF THE AIR BAG COVER HAS SEPARATED OR THE AIR BAG MATERIAL HAS BEEN EXPOSED, INSTALL A NEW SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE AIR BAG MODULE. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.








1. As marked during disassembly, install the inboard and outboard head restraint guides.

NOTE: The inboard and outboard head restraint guides are not interchangeable.







2. Install the side air bag module onto the front seat back frame mounting bracket.
1 Route the side air bag module wire harness through the outboard opening in the side of the seat back cushion.
2 Position the side air bag module through the outboard opening in the side of the seat back cushion and onto the mounting bracket.
3 Install the side air bag module retaining nuts. Tighten to specification.

NOTE: If installing a new side air bag module, use new retaining nuts. If the same side air bag module is to be reused, then reuse the side air bag module nuts.







3. Attach the top of the lumbar basket on the backrest frame.







4. Hook the bottom of the lumbar basket on the backrest frame.






5. Position the backrest cushion. Install new hog rings.

CAUTION: New stainless steel hog rings must be installed on seats equipped with side air bag modules to ensure the correct deployment of the side air bag.







6. Install the backrest upholstery and smooth out any wrinkles.

CAUTION: Use care when attaching the backrest upholstery to the hook and loop fasteners to avoid tearing the fastener off the seat foam.







7. Attach the backrest upholstery J-clip.







8. Install the safety belt guide.







9. Install the screw cover.
10. Install the backrest on the lower seat frame.
11. Install the seat front cushion side shield.
12. Install the head restraint.
13. Restore the vehicle to operating condition.
1 Install the front seat.

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE FRONT SEAT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.

2 Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.

3 With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

WARNING: THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.

4 Check the active restraints for correct operation.
