Convertible Top Motor: Service and Repair
REMOVALNOTE: The convertible top hydraulic components are removed from the vehicle as an assembly. The hydraulic components are individually repaired and the system must be bled before being installed into the vehicle.
Hydraulic system
1. With the convertible top closed and unlatched, detach the interior well sling trim cover.
2. Disconnect the rear window defrost grid electrical connector locator from the body.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to disconnect the rear window defrost grid connector from the rear window glass.
3. Disconnect the rear window defrost grid electrical connector and route the wire out through the hole in the well sling interior trim cover.
4. Remove the ground bolt for the rear window defrost grid.
5. Route the rear window defrost grid ground wire out through the hole in the well sling interior trim cover.
6. Position the well sling interior trim cover aside.
7. Position the two lift cylinders aside.
1 Remove the two bolts.
2 Remove the two nuts.
8. Remove the motor noise reduction shroud.
9. Disconnect the motor electrical connector.
10. Release the hydraulic line retainers on each side.
11. Pull up on the motor assembly to release the rubber retainers.
12. Remove the motor assembly and lift cylinders as an assembly.
Lift cylinder
13. Remove the hydraulic lines from the lift cylinder.
NOTE: Prior to their removal, mark the upper and lower hydraulic lines to insure correct installation on the new lift cylinder.
Motor assembly
14. Remove the hydraulic lines from the motor assembly.
NOTE: Prior to removal, mark the hydraulic lines to insure correct installation of the motor assembly.
INSTALLATION
Lift cylinder
1. Install the hydraulic lines using a thread locker onto the lift cylinder.
NOTE:
^ Be sure that each fitting is installed in the correct position on the folding top lift cylinder.
^ Make sure that the tetra seal is installed in the bottom of each of the folding top lift cylinder ports before attaching the upper and lower hose fittings.
Motor assembly
2. Install the hydraulic lines using a thread locker onto the motor assembly.
NOTE: Be sure that each fitting is installed in the correct position on the motor assembly.
Hydraulic system
3. Remove the fill plug at the end of the motor assembly.
4. Fill the pump with Mercon(R) Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent to the bottom of the fill hole and install the fill plug.
5. Connect a 12-volt power source to the motor connector and operate the motor assembly until the lift cylinders are fully extended. Reverse the 12-volt connection to fully retract the lift cylinders. Repeat this procedure three times.
NOTE: Some noise squeal may be noticed due to the air in the system.
6. Remove the fill plug and check the fluid level. Fill the pump with MERCON(R) Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent to the bottom of the fill hole.
7. Install the fill plug.
8. Install the motor assembly and lift cylinders as an assembly.
9. Install the motor assembly.
10. Engage the hydraulic line retainers on each side.
11. Connect the motor assembly electrical connector.
12. Install the motor noise reduction shroud.
13. Install the two lift cylinders.
1 Install the two nuts.
2 Install the two bolts.
14. Route the rear window defrost grid ground wire through the hole in the well sling interior trim cover.
15. Install the rear window defrost grid ground bolt.
16. Route the rear window defrost grid wire through the hole in the well sling interior trim cover.
17. Connect the rear window defrost grid electrical connector and attach the locator to the body.
18. Install the well sling interior trim cover.
