Removal and Installation

REMOVAL

CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.

1. Position the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
2. Remove the driver air bag module.
3. Remove the floor console.







4. Remove the three pin-type retainers and the LH instrument panel insulator.
- Disconnect the courtesy lamp.







5. Remove the two pin-type retainers and the RH instrument panel insulator.
- Disconnect the courtesy lamp.







6. Remove the LH and RH scuff plates.







7. Position the LH and RH door weatherstrips aside.







8. Remove the LH and RH A-pillar lower trim panels.
9. Remove the LH and RH windshield side garnish mouldings.







10. Remove the instrument panel defroster opening grille.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.







11. Remove the instrument panel cowl top screws.







12. Loosen the instrument panel upper reinforcement bolts.







13. Remove the LH and RH instrument panel side finish panels.
14. Remove the glove compartment.







15. Disconnect the upper RH bulkhead electrical connector.
1 Loosen the bolt.
2 Disconnect the upper RH bulkhead electrical connector.
3 Disconnect the electrical connector.







16. Through the instrument panel side opening and the glove compartment opening, disconnect the RH electrical connectors.







17. Disconnect the passenger side tunnel electrical connector.







18. Position the hood release handle and cable aside.
1 Remove the screws.
2 Position the hood release handle and cable aside.







19. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
1 Remove the pin-type retainers.
2 Release the instrument panel steering column cover.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.







20. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover reinforcement.
1 Remove the screws.
2 Remove the reinforcement.







21. Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
1 Remove and discard the pinch bolt.
2 Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column.

CAUTION: Secure the steering wheel to prevent any rotation or damage to the clockspring.







22. Remove the steering column brace.
1 Remove the nut.
2 Remove the bolt.







23. Disconnect the LH junction box electrical connector.
- Position the carpet aside to gain access to the connector.







24. Through the instrument panel side opening, disconnect the LH electrical connectors.







25. Remove the LH instrument panel cowl side bolt.
1 Position LH electrical connector block aside.
2 Remove the bolt.







26. Remove the four instrument panel tunnel brace bolts.







27. Remove the LH instrument panel cowl side bolt and nut.







28. Remove the RH instrument panel cowl side bolt and nut.
29. Remove the instrument panel.

NOTE: Two technicians are necessary to carry out this step.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.

1. Position the instrument panel.

2. Install the instrument panel cowl top screws.







3. Install the RH instrument panel cowl side bolt and nut.







4. Install the LH instrument panel cowl side bolt and nut.







5. Tighten the instrument panel upper reinforcement bolts.







6. Install the four instrument panel tunnel brace bolts.

CAUTION: Make sure the instrument panel steering column cover reinforcement is in place before completing this step.







7. Install the LH instrument panel cowl side bolts.
1 Install the bolt.
2 Position LH electrical connector block to the connector block bracket.







8. Through the instrument panel side opening, connect the LH electrical connectors.







9. Connect the LH junction box electrical connector.







10. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column.
1 Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column.
2 Install a new pinch bolt.







11. Connect the passenger side tunnel electrical connector.







12. Install the steering column brace.
1 Position the brace.
2 Install the bolt.
3 Install the nut.







13. Install the instrument panel steering column cover reinforcement.
1 Position the panel.
2 Install the screws.







14. Install the instrument panel steering column cover.
1 Position the instrument panel steering column cover.
2 Install the pin-type retainers.
- Connect the electrical connectors.







15. Position the hood release handle and cable and install the screws.







16. Through the instrument panel side opening, connect the RH electrical connectors.







17. Connect the RH bulkhead electrical connector.
1 Connect the RH bulkhead electrical connector.
2 Tighten the bolt.
3 Connect the electrical connector.

18. Install the glove compartment.







19. Install the LH and RH instrument panel side finish panels.







20. Install the instrument panel defroster opening grille assembly.
- Connect the electrical connector.

21. Install the LH and RH windshield side garnish mouldings.







22. Install the LH and RH A-pillar lower trim panels.







23. Install the LH and RH door weatherstrips.







24. Install the LH and RH scuff plates.







25. Position the LH instrument panel insulator and install the three pin-type retainers.
- Connect the courtesy lamp.







26. Position the RH instrument panel insulator and install the two pin-type retainers.
- Connect the courtesy lamp.

27. Install the floor console.
28. Install the driver air bag module.
