MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION NETWORK
INTERFERENCE
FORD:
2002 THUNDERBIRD
ISSUE
Some vehicles may exhibit a rapid cycling or clicking type noise from the audio system while in AM Band only. This may be caused by interference from the Multiplex Communication Network intercepted by the audio system.
ACTION
Reroute the affected section of the Multiplex Communication Network by installing a jumper wiring harness to the Rear Electronics Module (REM) and Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Module.
Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
THE PARTS AND PROCEDURE FOUND IN THIS ARTICLE WILL NOT REPAIR BASIC RADIO RECEPTION TROUBLES OR IMPROVE THE RECEPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AUDIO SYSTEM. REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 415-00, FOR NORMAL DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR INFORMATION ON THE AUDIO SYSTEM.
1. Remove Hard Top (if equipped) and raise the Convertible Top.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Locate and unsnap 6 (six) snaps (3 on each side) that attach the convertible top sling side panels to the main panel.
4. To gain access to the REM and RKE modules, remove the sling from the mounting hardware. At the rear and sides of the sling are slots that fit atop oversized washers attached to the vehicle. Slide the sling up and then gently pull over the washer at each attachment.
NOTE
THE CONVERTIBLE TOP REAR HEATED WINDOW WIRING HARNESS IS ROUTED THROUGH THE SLING. USE CARE NOT TO DAMAGE OR DISCONNECT THIS WIRING HARNESS.
5. Expose the REM and RKE modules by carefully pulling back the watershield cover from front to back. Do not remove the watershield cover entirely. Only pull it back far enough to gain access to the REM and RKE wiring connectors.
6. Remove the Left Lower A-Pillar Trim Panel (Kick Panel). Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 501-05 for further details.
7. Fold the carpet back enough to gain access to the Auxiliary Junction Box.
8. Remove the 2nd (second) and 4th (fourth) screws from the Left Door Sill Wiring Shield.
9. Remove the Left Rear Speaker Grille and Left Rear Quarter Trim Panel from it's retaining clips and position inboard the vehicle. This is the trim panel where the seat belt is routed through. It is unnecessary to remove the seat belt assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 501 - 05 for further details.
10. Unpack and lay out the Service Wiring Harness 1W6Z-14588-AA. The front of the harness is the end with terminals bunched tightly together.
11. Locate and unplug the 2nd (C283b) and 3rd (C283a) connectors at the Auxiliary Junction Box. These connectors are located along the left lower section of the interior bulkhead (Figure 1).
12. Using a small-standard flat blade screwdriver, gently remove the secondary locks from 2 (two) connectors by first lifting the lock from the center/top until it is evenly raised slightly off the connector. Finish by lifting up on the side of the lock and remove from the connector.
13. To remove the wire and terminal, insert a flat blade mini-screwdriver into the face of the connector and gently lift the locking tab inside the desired cavity. Pull out the wire and terminal from rear of the connector. For detailed connector views, refer to Wiring Diagrams Manual, Section 150. The following are the correct connector/circuit locations. Immediately insert the matching wire from the service kit to avoid confusion:
a. C283a (blue) - Ckt 4-EG13 GY/OR, Cavity 8 - replace with GY/OR in Service Kit
b. C283a (blue) - Ckt 5-EG13 BU/BK, Cavity 4 - replace with BU/BK in Service Kit
c. C283b (grey) - Ckt 4-EG12 GY/WH, Cavity 16 - replace with GY/WH in Service Kit
d. C283b (grey) - Ckt 5-EG12 BU/OR, Cavity 12 - replace with BU/OR in Service Kit
14. Reinstall the secondary locks in each connector and reconnect C283a and C283B to their correct locations at the Auxiliary Junction Box.
15. Use electrical tape to completely cover each of the 4 (four) removed terminals.
16. Route the Service Wiring Harness down the left side of the vehicle, following the path of the main vehicle interior wiring harness. Place the harness inside the Left Door Sill Wiring Shield (Figure 2).
17. Route the Service Wiring Harness to the convertible top well through the lower opening in the sheet metal panel, following the path of the main vehicle interior wiring harness. Do not route through the opening below the audio speaker. Sharp edges exist in this opening that can damage the harness (Figure 3).
18. Locate and disconnect the RKE module electrical connector (Figure 4).
19. Remove the connector secondary lock by gently lifting up on the lock located on the side of the connector with a small-standard size screwdriver.
20. To remove the wire & terminal, insert a flat blade mini-screwdriver into the face of the connector and gently lift the locking tab inside the desired cavity. Pull out the wire & terminal from rear of the connector. For detailed connector views, refer to Wiring Diagrams Manual, Section 150. Immediately insert the matching wire from the service kit to avoid confusion. The following are the correct cavity/circuit locations:
a. C4071 - Ckt 4-EG13 GY/OR, Cavity 3 - replace with GY/OR in Service Kit
b. C4071 - Ckt 5-EG13 BU/BK, Cavity 4 - replace with BU/BK in Service Kit
21. Reinstall the secondary locks in the RKE connector and reconnect to the RKE module. Use electrical tape to completely cover each of the 2 (two) removed terminals.
22. Locate and disconnect the 4th connector (C420c) at the REM (Figure 4).
23. Remove the connector secondary lock by gently lifting up on the lock located on the side of the connector with a small-standard size screwdriver.
24. The following are the correct cavity/circuit locations:
a. C420c - Ckt 4-EG12 GY/WH, Cavity 1 - replace with GY/WH in Service Kit
b. C420c - Ckt 5-EG12 BU/OR, Cavity 2 - replace with BU/OR in Service Kit
25. Reinstall the secondary locks in the REM connector and reconnect to the REM. Use electrical tape to completely cover each of the 2 (two) removed terminals.
26. Starting at the Auxiliary Junction Box under the dash, secure the Service Wiring Harness to the main interior harness using electrical tape. Secure the harnesses together at 6 inch intervals ending in the rear well area at the RKE module and REM. Install the 2nd (second) and 4th (fourth) screws at the Left Door Sill Wiring Shield.
27. Reinstall the RKE module/REM watershield and the vehicle interior trim panels in the reverse order that they were removed.
28. Reconnect the battery and reset the Short Drop Window Calibration found in the Owner's Guide.
