Body - Hood Latch Difficult/Unable to Open

OPEN OR UNABLE TO OPEN - VEHICLES WITH 2.0L
ENGINE ONLY

FORD:
2000-2003 FOCUS

ISSUE

Some 2000-2003 Focus vehicles with 2.0L engine, may exhibit a difficult to open or unable to open hood condition. The condition will occur in extreme cold weather conditions -20°C (-4°F).

ACTION

To service, replace the Hood Latch Cable. Refer to the Service Procedure below for cable installation and revised cable routing instruction. The revised cable routing will reduce the possibility of water ingression and freezing inside the cable.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

HOOD LATCH CABLE REMOVAL

1. Disconnect battery negative cable.

2. Remove the radiator air deflector.

3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

4. Remove the battery junction box and position out of the way to provide access to the hood cable grommet on the bulkhead.

5. Disconnect the cable from the instrument panel.

6. Loosen (do not remove) the hood latch bolts enough to provide access to the hood latch cable, then disconnect the cable from the hood latch assembly.

7. Remove the cable, by disconnecting the cable retainers, and then pull the cable inside the passenger compartment through the bulkhead.

HOOD LATCH CABLE INSTALLATION

1. Install the cable through the bulkhead from the passenger compartment into the engine compartment. Be sure to fully seat the cable grommet to the bulkhead.

2. Route the cable along the fender and radiator support and reattach the cable retainers.





a. Route the cable along the front of the radiator support bracket above the headlamp. Use two (2) tie straps (95874-S101) to secure the cable to the radiator support bracket (Figure 1).





b. Drill a 3 mm (1/8") hole in the radiator grille and use another tie strap (95874-S101) to secure the cable to the radiator grille (Figure 2).

3. Connect the cable to the hood latch and tighten the hood latch bolts.

4. Connect the cable to the instrument panel.

5. Verify proper hood release cable operation.

6. Reinstall the battery junction box.

7. Reinstall the air cleaner.

8. Reinstall the radiator air deflector.

9. Reconnect battery.
