Special Tools

Removal

1. General Notes.
^ The positions of the engine mountings and engine roll restrictors are described looking from the transaxle towards the engine.
^ Operations for particular variants which do not apply to all vehicles are marked clearly with a note.
^ If necessary, remove the cable ties and install new ones when reinstalling the assembly.

2. CAUTION: Disconnect the battery ground and positive cables.

Remove the battery.





3. Remove the battery tray.
1. Disconnect and separate the connector.
2. Remove the bolts.
3. Unclip the wiring harness.





4. Remove the air cleaner housing.
1. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
2. Detach the crankcase ventilation hose.
3. Detach the intake hose.
^ Remove the air cleaner housing from the rubber bushes.





5. Disconnect the ground lead.

6. NOTE: Use an Allen key to prevent the piston rod from rotating.





Loosen the lock nuts on both sides place turns.





7. Using the special tool, hold the gearshift lever in place in the vehicle.
^ Shift the gearshift mechanism to neutral.
^ Remove the gearshift lever cover and install special tool.





8. Remove the intake tube.

9. NOTE: The resonator is plugged into the bracket.





Remove the air cleaner intake with resonator.





10. Remove the shift cable and selector cable from the transaxle.
1. Remove the shift cable from the gear lever.
2. Pretension the abutment collars by turning them in an counter clockwise direction and remove the cable assembly from the bracket.
3. Remove the selector cable from the selector lever.
4. Pretension the abutment collars by turning them in an counter clockwise direction and remove the cable assembly from the bracket.
5. Loosen the adjustment mechanism by pressing it in.
11. Raise the vehicle.





12. Remove the flexible exhaust pipe.





13. Remove the roll restrictor.





14. Remove the lower suspension arms on both sides.

15. CAUTION: The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees the outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.





Loosen the right-hand driveshaft together with the intermediate shaft.

^ Remove the intermediate shaft bearing cap.
^ Discard the nuts and the bearing cap.
^ Remove the intermediate shaft from the transaxle together with the driveshaft and secure it using cable ties.

16. CAUTION: The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees the outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.





Remove the left-hand driveshaft from the transaxle.
^ Using the special tool, loosen the driveshaft from the transaxle.
^ Remove the driveshaft from the transaxle and secure it using cable ties.
^ Close off the transaxle opening using an auxiliary plug.





17. Remove the drive belt cover.

18. Lower the vehicle.

19. WARNING Escaping brake fluid. Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with the skin or the eyes. If brake fluid does come into contact with the skin or the eyes, rinse the affected areas with water immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION: If brake fluid is split on the paint work, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.





Remove the high-pressure line from the clutch slave cylinder
^ Remove the clip.
^ Remove the high-pressure line and tie up using cable ties.





20. Disconnect the reversing light switch connector.





21. Install the special tools (illustration shows battery installed)





22. Remove the rear engine mounting.
23. Lower the engine and transaxle assembly slightly using special tool 303-290.





24. Remove the rear engine mounting bracket.





25. Remove the two upper flange bolts.

26. NOTE: Do not disconnect the starter motor.





Loosen the starter motor.
^ Remove the three bolts (two bolts shown).
^ Secure the starter motor using cable ties.
27. Raise the vehicle.





28. Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.





29. Push the engine and transaxle assembly forwards and insert an approximately 350 mm long wooden block between the engine and the subframe.





30. Position a transaxle jack under the transaxle and secure it with a retaining strap.





31. Remove the lower flange bolts (five bolts).





32. Remove the lower flange bolts (four bolts).
33. Remove the transaxle from the engine and lower it using transaxle jack.
