IDENTIFICATION CODES
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the Vehicle Certification (VC) label.
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI):

The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier.
^ 3FA - Ford, Mexico, passenger car
Restraint System:
The fourth VIN position is the vehicle restraint system type code.
^ B - Dual air bag delete, active safety belts, all positions (Mexico only), two-door, four-door
^ L - Active safety belts - all positions, driver and front passenger air bags, two-door, four-door
^ F - Active safety belts - all positions, driver and front passenger air bags, two-door
Line, Series And Body Type:
Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type.
^ P11-Coupe, SE, two-door
^ P13 - Sedan, SE, four-door
Engine Type:
The eighth VIN position is the engine displacement and number of cylinders code.
^ 3-2.0L, ZETEC, four cylinder (two-door)
^ P-2.0L, S.P.I., four cylinder (four-door)
Check Digit:
The ninth VIN position is a government assigned, computer-generated check digit code (0-9).
Model Year:
The tenth VIN position is the model year code.
^ 1-2001
Assembly Plant:
The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.
^ R - Hermosillo (Mexico)
^ S - Pilot Plant, Allen Park, Michigan (USA)
Production Sequence Number:
The last six VIN positions are the production sequence number. This is also used as the serial and warranty number.
