TRANSMISSION - 4R70W - OVERDRIVE
INOPERATIVE - VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH POLICE
PACKAGE ONLY

FORD:
2001-2002 CROWN VICTORIA

ISSUE

Some police package equipped Crown Victorias may exhibit a loss of 4th gear (overdrive). This may be caused by forced 4-2 downshifts (usually from high speeds). The original PCM (Powertrain Control Module) calibration may allow transmission component engagements during forced 4-2 downshifts in a manner that may lead to failure of the Overdrive (OD) Band.

ACTION

Verify the condition. Diagnose and service the Transmission per the Workshop Manual. Verify that the PCM calibration is at the latest level, if not, it must be reprogrammed. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Follow the normal diagnostic procedures to verify no 4th gear operation.

2. Replace the OD band if no 4th gear or slipping 4th gear. Follow all the normal procedures as shown in the Workshop Manual.

3. Use the procedures found in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Workshop Manual and reprogram the PCM. Refer to the PCM Calibration Information Chart shown.

4. Clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s and validate service. If the condition is not corrected, continue with Diagnosis By Symptom as shown in the Workshop Manual.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
