Exterior Lighting






The front side lights are built into the headlamp housing and cannot be removed separately. The headlamp is fitted with a H4L-50/55W bulb for dipped beam and main beam.

A "complex shape" reflector ensures a very high light intensity.

Plastic is used to produce the headlamp lens because it is lighter and makes for easier moulding.

The direction indicator in the bumper has a clear P-21W bulb.

Depending on the country and the model variant, some variants of the vehicle are fitted with a headlamp range control switch in line with legal provisions. To avoid dazzling the oncoming traffic, the continuously variable required headlamp range can be controlled with a switch on the instrument panel when the dipped beam (and the side lamp) are switched on, according to the vehicle load. By operating the switch that controls the motor attached to each headlamp, it is possible to move the pivoted reflector around an adjusting spindle to the required position. The headlamp range control switch has switch positions "0" to "4". The switch clicks into place in position "0" (neutral position). Switch position "4" corresponds to the maximum tilt angle of the headlamps.

The headlamp levelling system is operated by means of voltage-controlled DC motors. A variable resistance (potentiometer) in the headlamp levelling switch sets a voltage (setting). Working on the same principle, the control element in the motor defines a voltage according to the position of the adjusting spindle (actual position).

The integrated electronic circuitry compares the setting (switch position) with the actual position (position of the adjusting spindle). Depending on the voltage difference the reflectors are swivelled up or down until the two values are the same.

The basic alignment of the headlamps should always be carried out in switch position "0".

Headlamp System
The headlamp system consists of:
^ two headlamps,
^ light switch,
^ Relay for switching between main and dipped beam,
^ direction indicator/dipped beam switch,
^ main beam display,
^ wiring,
^ fuses,
^ headlamp levelling system.

The voltage is supplied to the light switch via a fuse. This fuse is located in the central junction box in the left-hand footwell.

When the headlamps are switched on, a voltage is supplied to the main beam/dipped beam switch and to the dipped beam relay. The relay for the dipped beam is located in the Battery Junction Box (BJB) in the engine compartment.

If the main beam/dipped beam switch is set to "dipped beam", then a voltage is supplied via the dipped beam relay to the dipped beam part of the headlamp assembly. The left and right-hand dipped beams are fused separately. The fuses are located in the battery junction box (BJB) in the engine compartment.

If the main beam/dipped beam switch is set to "main beam", then a voltage is supplied via the main beam relay to the main beam part of the headlamp assembly. The left and right-hand main beams are fused separately. The fuses are located in the battery junction box (BJB) in the engine compartment.

Light switch
The light switch has up to seven positions:
^ Off,
^ Left-hand side light,
^ Right-hand side light,
^ Both side lights,
^ Headlamps,
^ Fog lamps,
^ Rear fog lights.

When the switch is set to "left-hand side light" or "right- hand side light", a voltage is supplied to the left or right- hand front and rear side lights. The side lights for the left and right-hand sides are fused separately. The fuses are located in the central junction box (CJB) in the left-hand side footwell.

When the light switch is set to "both side lights", a voltage is supplied to the front and rear side lights, as well as to the license plate light. The fuses are located in the central junction box (CJB) in the left-hand side footwell.

When the switch is set to "headlamps", the fog lamps can be switched on by pulling the switch. In the first setting the fog lamps are switched on. In the second setting the rear fog lights are switched on. If fog lamps are not fitted then the switch only has one setting.

Instrument Lighting Dimmer Module
^ The instrument lighting dimmer module is a variable resistance.
^ The instrument lighting dimmer module controls the brightness of the instrument lighting, the radio lighting and the air conditioning lighting.

"Lights on" warning signal
The "lights on" warning signal is part of the central timer module. It is located in the central junction box (CJB).

If when the ignition is off the switch is set to "headlamps" or "both side lights on", then a warning signal sounds when the driver's door is opened.

Rear fog lights
The rear fog light system consists of:
^ Rear fog lamps
^ Rear fog light switch and rear fog light indicator light,
^ Wiring,
^ Fuses.

The voltage supply to the rear fog lights is switched via the dipped beam, so that the rear fog lights only light up when the dipped beam is switched on.

Brake Light Switch
The brake light switch:
^ is an ON/OFF switch,
^ is fitted underneath the instrument panel near the brake pedal,
^ supplies a voltage to the brake lights and the additional brake light via a fuse in the central junction box (CJB).

Brake Lights
^ The brake lights are part of the rear lamp assembly.
^ The brake light switch supplies a voltage to the brake lights.

Additional Brake Light
^ The additional brake light switch receives its voltage supply from the brake light switch.

Parking, Reversing And Side Lights
^ The voltage for these lights is supplied via the light switch.
^ The left and right-hand circuits are fused separately in the central junction box (CJB).
^ The lights will work when the light switch is set to "side lights" or "headlamps".

License Plate Light
^ The licence plate light lights up when the light switch is set to either "both side lights" or "headlamps".

Reversing Lights
The reversing light system consists of:
^ Reversing light bulb Transmission range sensor (automatic transmission),
^ Reversing light switch (manual transmission),
^ Wiring,
^ Fuse.

The voltage supply to the reversing lights is provided by the reversing light switch on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission and by the transmission range sensor on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. There is a fuse for this circuit in the central junction box (CJB).

Direction Indicator Lights And Hazard Warning Lights
The direction indicator lights and hazard warning lights system consists of:
^ Direction indicator/dipped beam light switch
^ Indicator relay,
^ Direction indicator lights,
^ Direction indicator light control lamp,
^ Wiring,
^ Fuse.

The indicator relay is supplied with a voltage via the direction indicator/dipped beam light switch. There is a fuse for the direction indicator/dipped beam light switch in both the battery junction box (BJB) and the central junction box (CJB).

If the direction indicator/dipped beam light switch is switched downwards, then the left-hand direction indicator lights are supplied with a voltage via the indicator relay. If the direction indicator/dipped beam light switch is switched upwards, then the right-hand direction indicator lights are supplied with a voltage.

Hazard Warning Lights Switch
^ The hazard warning lights switch is integrated into the direction indicator/dipped beam light switch. It is located on the top of the steering column shroud.
^ When the hazard warning light switch is switched on, all four direction indicator lights and both direction indicator light control lamps are supplied with a voltage via the indicator relay.

Indicator Relay
The indicator relay:
^ is an electronic unit,
^ is located on the steering column on the direction indicator/dipped beam light switch.

Differences For The Scandinavian Market
Once the ignition is switched on the daytime running lamps (dimmed dipped beam) must light up. The daytime running lamps consist of:
^ Daytime running lamp relay,
^ Resistance for dimmed dipped beam,
^ Three diodes for the daytime running lamps. The voltage supply to the dipped beam bulbs is reduced by connecting the resistance for the dimmed dipped beams in series with the bulbs. This reduces the power of the dipped beam.

If the side lights or the headlamps are switched on with the light switch, then the daytime running lamps relay breaks the circuit via the resistance for the dimmed dipped beam. If the light switch is set to "headlamps", then the dipped beam bulbs are supplied with a voltage via the dipped beam relay, and they shine at full power.

The diodes for the daytime running lamps only allow the current to flow in one direction when the light switch is switched on, as otherwise a few contacts in the light switch which are not required for the daytime running lamps would be made.
