Vehicle Specific Ignition System
The Electronic Ignition system is a coil-on-plug (COP) ignition system. The COP ignition system consists of:
^ Crankshaft position sensor
^ Ignition coil
^ Spark plugs
The crankshaft position sensor:
^ is a variable reluctance sensor.
^ provides base timing and crankshaft speed information to the powertrain control module (PCM).
^ is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel mounted on the crankshaft.
Refer to Computers and Control Systems for Removal and Installation of the crankshaft position sensor.
The eight separate ignition coils:
^ change low voltage signals from the PCM to high voltage pulses for the spark plugs.
^ are connected directly to each spark plug.
^ are controlled by the PCM for proper firing sequence.
The spark plugs:
^ change a high voltage pulse into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
^ originally equipped on the vehicle have a platinum-enhanced active electrode for long life.
