Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Remove the left and right valve covers.
2. Remove the cooling fan.





3. Remove the water pump pulley.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the water pump pulley.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley.





5. Position the A/C muffler out of the way.





6. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump aside.





7. Remove the nut; position the A/C muffler aside.





8. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor.





9. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.





10. Remove the four front bolts.
11. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
12. Lower the vehicle.





13. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor.





14. Remove the belt idler pulley.





15. Remove the bolts and the studs, and the engine front cover.

- CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

Remove and discard the gasket, clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.


Installation





1. NOTE: If the valve cover is not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-l9A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-MSB392-A. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or four minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure may result in future oil leakage.

Apply silicone sealer in the locations shown.
- Use Silicone Gasket and Sealant F7AZ-19554-EA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A4.





2. Install the engine front cover.





3. Install the belt idler.





4. Connect the camshaft position sensor.
5. Raise the vehicle.
6. Install the crankshaft front oil seal.





7. Tighten the bolts in three stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.).
- Stage 2: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 3: Tighten an additional 60°.





8. Install the drain plug.





9. Connect the crankshaft position sensor.





10. Position the A/C muffler and tighten the nut.





11. Position the power steering pump and install the bolts.





12. Position the cables and install the two nuts.
13. Install the crankshaft pulley.





14. Install the water pump pulley.
15. Install the cooling fan.
16. Install the left and right valve cover.
