Shift Linkage: Description and Operation

The transmission shift control linkage consists of:
^ floor-mounted transmission range selector lever.
^ a cable connecting the shifter to the transmission manual control lever.
^ a brake/shifter interlock system.
^ an ignition/shifter interlock cable connecting the transmission range selector lever to the steering column lock assembly.

The ignition/shifter interlock cable locks the transmission range selector lever in the PARK position when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. It also requires the transmission range selector lever to be in the PARK position to turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
