Preliminary Procedures
Perform the following preliminary procedures before replacing power steering components:Air Bleeding
If bubbles are present in the power steering fluid, bleed the system as follows:
1. Fill the power steering oil reservoir.
2. Run the engine until the fluid reaches normal operating temperature of 74°-79°C (165°-175°F).
3. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right several times.
CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel in the far left or right position, or damage to power steering pump may result.
4. Check the fluid level.
5. If air is still trapped in the system, perform Purging Power Steering System of Air procedure. Service and Repair
Fluid Level
1. Run the engine until the fluid reaches normal operating temperature of 74°-79°C (165°-175°F).
2. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right several times. Turn the engine off.
3. Check the fluid level in the power steering oil reservoir. If the level is low, add MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent.
CAUTION: Do not overfill the power steering oil reservoir.
Pump Belt
Replace broken, glazed or worn drive belts.
