Crankshaft Main Bearing: Service and Repair

The crankshaft main bearings are precision select-fit.

REMOVAL
1. Remove cylinder heads to eliminate cylinder block distortion.
2. Remove oil Pan.
3. Remove oil pump screen cover and tube.

Part 1 Of 3:

Part 3 Of 3:

4. Replace one crankshaft main bearing at a time, leaving the other crankshaft main bearings securely fastened.
Remove crankshaft main bearing cap to which new crankshaft main bearings are to be installed.
5. Insert Main Bearing Insert Tool, 303-003 (TOOL-6331-E) or equivalent in the oil hole in the crankshaft.
6. Rotate crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to force crankshaft main bearing out of the cylinder block.
7. Clean crankshaft journals. Inspect journals and thrust faces (crankshaft thrust main bearing) for nicks, burrs or bearing pick-up that would cause premature crankshaft main bearing wear.

INSTALLATION
1. Lubricate and position the upper crankshaft main bearing on crankshaft journal with plain end started into the side of cylinder block with locking tang slot. Line up crankshaft main bearing tang with slot in cylinder block.

NOTE: Lightly oil all bolt and stud threads before installation with Super Premium SAE 5W30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G.

2. Install Main Bearing Insert Tool 303-003 (TOOL-6331-E) or equivalent in crankshaft journal oil hole.
3. With crankshaft main bearing and tool in position, rotate crankshaft so that the tool catches the edge of the crankshaft main bearing and pushes crankshaft main bearing into position in cylinder block. Remove tool.
4. Install crankshaft main bearing in crankshaft main bearing cap.
5. If crankshaft main bearing clearance is to be checked.
6. If No.1 or No.2 crankshaft main bearing was removed, lubricate bearing surface with Super Premium SAE 5W30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G and install crankshaft main bearing cap.
Tighten retaining bolts in two steps, in sequence:
a. Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
b. Rotate an additional 115-125 degrees.

7. If rear crankshaft main bearing was removed, perform the following:
a. Remove all traces of sealant from main bearing cap to cylinder block parting line.

NOTE:
- Prior to applying sealer, clean sealing surfaces with Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RH or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M5B392-A, to remove all residues that may interfere with the sealers ability to adhere.
- The crankshaft main bearing cap must be installed within 7 minutes after the silicone sealer application. After this time, the sealer may start to set-up and its sealing effectiveness may be reduced.

b. Apply two 4-6 Nm (0.157-0.26 inch) beads of Silicone Gasket and Sealant E6AZ-19562-AG or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-AG to main bearing cap-to-cylinder block parting line.
c. Lubricate bearing surfaces with Super Premium SAE 5W30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G and install crankshaft main bearing cap. Tighten retaining bolts in sequence, in two steps: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). Rotate an additional 115-125 degrees.
8. If crankshaft thrust main bearing was removed, perform the following:
a. Lubricate bearing surface with Super Premium SAE 5W30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G and install crankshaft main bearing cap with bolt and finger-tighten.
b. Pry crankshaft forward against thrust surface on upper crankshaft thrust main bearing, while holding bearing cap to the rear. This aligns thrust rear surfaces on both halves of the crankshaft thrust main bearing.
c. While holding crankshaft forward, tighten crankshaft main bearing cap retaining bolts in two steps:
(1) Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
(2) Rotate an additional 115-125 degrees
9. Install oil pump screen cover and tube with a new oil pump inlet tube gasket.
Tighten oil pump screen cover and tube retaining bolts to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
Tighten oil pump screen cover and tube support bracket retaining nut to 40-55 Nm (30-40 ft. lbs.).
10. Install oil pan.
11. Install cylinder heads.
