Windshield Wiper System

The windshield wiper system consists of the following components:
- windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft, a modular assembly consisting of cowl top extension, wiper linkage, wiper pivots and windshield wiper motor. This assembly is non-repairable except for the windshield wiper motor.
- windshield wiper motor is attached to the windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft.
- multi-function switch, which incorporates a rotary wiper switch and a push-type washer actuator.
- windshield wiper control module located behind the instrument panel above the opening for the instrument panel ash receptacle.
- RH windshield wiper pivot arm.
- LH windshield wiper pivot arm.
- two windshield wiper blades.
- windshield washer system.

Off/Low/High Speed
The two-speed, permanent magnet, three brush electric windshield wiper motor operates in the following manner:
- A brush rigging permits selection of low or high speed.
- When the multi-function switch is in LO position the common brush and the blue/orange wire brush are used and the windshield wiper motor operates at low speed.
- When the multi-function switch is in HI position the common brush and the white wire brush are used. Current bypasses a portion of the armature winding, and the windshield wiper motor runs at high speed.
- When the multi-function switch is moved to the OFF position, the windshield wiper motor will continue at low speed until the multi-function switch outer contacts open. When the park switch contacts open, the windshield wiper motor stops in the park position.

Interval

NOTE: When using interval wipers, the first wipe may not occur until after a pause of up to 17 seconds. When the multi-function switch is in the Interval (INT) position:
- The windshield wipers make single wipes separated by pauses.
- The control knob on the end of the multi-function switch sets the length of the pauses (from approximately 1 to 17 seconds).
- The length of pause decreases as the knob is rotated away from OFF and increases as the knob is rotated toward OFF.
- While in the interval wiper mode, it is normal to hear a slight ticking sound at the beginning of each wipe/pause cycle. This sound is from the wiper control module relay.
