Valve Train Analysis - Dynamic

Start the engine and, while running at idle, check for proper operation of all parts. Check the following:

Rocker Arm
- loose mounting bolts, studs and nuts
- plugged oil feed in the followers or cylinder head

Positive Rotator and Valve Spring Retainer Keys
Check for proper seating in the positive rotator and on valve stem.

Valves and Cylinder Head
- plugged oil drain back holes
- missing or damaged valve stem seals
- plugged oil metering hole in cylinder head oil reservoir

If insufficient oiling is suspected, check for blocked oil passages and accelerate the engine to 1200 rpm with the transmission in NEUTRAL and the engine at normal operating temperature. Oil should spurt from the rocker arm oil holes so that valve tips and rocker arms are well-oiled. With the valve cover off, some oil splash may overshoot rocker arms.
