LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT - GAP HIDER DETACHES
FROM REAR LIGHT BAR

FORD:
1998 CONTOUR

ISSUE:
The foam gap hider inside the luggage compartment may become detached from the rear light bar. This may be caused by the gap hider losing its adhesion to the light bar assembly.

ACTION:
Replace the gap hider with a revised gap hider. The revised gap hider has improved adhesion characteristics.

Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the rear light bar (Figure 1):

a. Raise the luggage compartment lid and remove the interior trim cover (if equipped).

b. Remove the six (6) attaching nuts; four (4) near the center and one (1) at each end of the light bar assembly. Pull the light bar assembly from the luggage compartment lid.

NOTE:
SOME EARLY BUILT 1998 CONTOURS UTILIZE FRICTION CLIPS RATHER THAN NUTS TO RETAIN THE OUTER END OF THE LIGHT BAR. AFTER REMOVING THE FOUR (4) CENTER RETAINING NUTS, GENTLY PULL THE OUTER END OF THE LIGHT BAR FROM THE LUGGAGE LID TO DISENGAGE THE FRICTION CLIPS.

2. Remove the foam gap hider from the rear light bar.

3. Clean the gap hider mounting surface on the light bar using isopropyl alcohol, making sure that all foam and adhesive residue is completely removed.

4. Install the new foam gap hider parallel to the upper edge of the rear light bar as shown in Figure 2 and press firmly into place.

5. Reinstall the rear light bar.
