Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair
Vehicles that have an inoperative A/C compressor due to internal causes should have the refrigerant system cleaned by flushing or filtering. This removes any debris or contaminants that may be present to prevent damage to the replacement A/C compressor.System flushing is the preferred method of cleaning. However, if flushing equipment is not available, system filtering may be performed as an alternative.
When A/C compressor is inoperative due to internal causes, clean the refrigerant system by flushing or filtering to remove any debris or contaminants and prevent damage to the replacement A/C compressor.
Replacement of the suction accumulator/drier is necessary when the A/C compressor is replaced.
The A/C evaporator core orifice should be replaced whenever the A/C compressor is replaced for lack of performance or when there is debris in the system.
Removal
1. Discharge the refrigerant system following the recommended service procedure. Observe all safety precautions.
2. Remove A/C compressor drive belt.
3. Disconnect A/C clutch wires at A/C compressor clutch field coil connector on the A/C compressor.
4. Loosen two clamps and remove air intake tube.
5. Remove the A/C manifold and tube from the A/C compressor. Cap the suction and discharge ports in the manifold and tube assembly and compressor to prevent the entry of dirt or moisture.
6. Remove four bolts that secure the A/C compressor to the mounting bracket and remove the A/C compressor from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Service the replacement A/C compressors with the correct amount of clean Motorcraft YN-12b refrigerant oil or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B.
2. Position the A/C compressor on the mounting bracket and install the four retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 41-61 N.m (31-44 lb-ft).
3. Remove the protective caps and install the A/C manifold and tube on the A/C compressor. Tighten retaining bolt to 17-23 N.m (13-16 lb-ft).
4. Connect the A/C clutch wires to the A/C clutch field coil connector.
5. Position air intake tube and tighten clamps.
6. Install the A/C compressor drive belt.
7. Leak test, evacuate and charge the system following the recommended service procedures. Observe all safety precautions.
8. Check the system for proper operation.
