SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIREDDescription Tool Number
Steering Wheel Puller T67L-3600-A
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
WARNING
^ THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DISCONNECTED BEFORE ANY AIR BAG COMPONENT IS SERVICED.
^ THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT NECESSARY FOR SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT IS POWERED DIRECTLY FROM THE BATTERY AND BACKUP POWER SUPPLY. TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BATTERY POSITIVE CABLE MUST BE DISCONNECTED FOR ONE MINUTE TO DISCONNECTED FOR ONE MINUTE TO DE-ENERGIZE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY PRIOR TO SERVICING OR REPLACING ANY AIR BAG SYSTEM COMPONENTS.
2. Disconnect positive battery cable and wait one minute. This is the time required for the air bag diagnostic monitor power supply to deplete its stored energy.
3. Remove steering wheel spoke cover. Remove two screws retaining driver side air bag module to steering wheel.
4. Disconnect electrical connector for driver side air bag module from connector for air bag sliding contact.
5. Remove driver side air bag module from steering wheel.
WARNING: PLACE AIR BAG MODULE ON BENCH WITH TRIM COVER FACING UP TO PREVENT AIR BAG MODULE FROM BECOMING AIRBORN IN EVENT OF ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
6. Remove and discard bolt retaining steering wheel to steering column.
NOTE: For proper steering wheel reinstallation, make sure front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
7. Install Steering Wheel Puller T67L-3600-A and remove steering wheel. Route wire harness for air bag sliding contact through steering wheel as steering wheel is removed.
8. Remove Steering Wheel Puller T67L-3600-A. Turn steering wheel over and remove four screws retaining rear steering wheel cover to steering wheel.
9. Remove rear steering wheel cover. Turn steering wheel over.
10. Disconnect one horn plate wire connector on each side of steering wheel. Disconnect single, in-line wire connector in purple wire at center of steering wheel. Remove four screws retaining LH and RH speed control actuator switches to steering wheel. Remove speed control actuator switches from steering wheel.
NOTE: The speed control actuator switches are one-piece. connected by wiring.
INSTALLATION
1. Install LH and RH speed control actuator switches from rear of steering wheel. Reconnect electrical connectors and install four Phillips(R) head screws for LH and RH speed control actuator switches.
NOTE: For proper steering wheel installation, make sure front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
2. Install four screws retaining rear steering wheel cover to steering wheel.
NOTE: Use care to prevent trapping wires between steering wheel and rear steering wheel cover.
3. Install steering wheel to steering column using new retaining screw. Tighten Torx(R) screw retaining steering wheel to 34-46 N.m (25-34 Lb-Ft).
4. Route wires through retaining clips in rear steering wheel cover. Be sure wires are not trapped between LH or RH horn plate and steering wheel.
5. Connect electrical connector from driver side air bag module to air bag sliding contact.
6. Install driver side air bag module to steering wheel. Tighten retaining screws to 10-14 N.m (89-124 Lb-In).
7. Install two steering wheel spoke covers.
8. Reconnect positive battery cable and battery ground cable.
NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 18 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
9. Check operation of speed control actuator switches.
10. Prove out air bag system.
