Timing Chain Tensioner: Service and Repair
Tensioner Lock Pin Installation:
NOTE: The timing chain tensioner can not be bled down while mounted to the engine assembly. This procedure should only be performed when the timing chains are removed.
1. Remove timing chain tensioner.
2. Using a small screwdriver, release the timing chain tensioner ratchet/pawl mechanism through the access hole in the timing chain tensioner.
3. Compress timing chain tensioner rack and piston into the tensioner housing by inserting a small wire into the top of piston and gently unseat oil check ball.
4. Compress timing chain tensioner by hand.
NOTE: Timing chain tensioner must be reinstalled onto engine while compressed and locked. Failure to compress timing chain tensioner prior to installation may cause damage to engine.
5. With the tensioner rack and piston compressed, install a 1.5mm (0.060 inch) drill bit (or paper clip) into the small hole above the ratchet, engaging the lock groove in the rack of the timing chain tensioner.
