This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the latest level parts.

ISSUE:
Approximately 3,000 1997 Taurus GL vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 2-valve engine (49-State calibrations only) were built with the new VF2 A/C compressor. The VF2 compressor offers improved durability and NVH. The VF2 A/C compressors use unique A/C hoses, drive belt, clutch assembly, mounting bolts and power steering line. This TSB article provides VF2 service replacement procedures and unique VF2 attaching component information.

ACTION:
If a vehicle equipped with a VF2 compressor requires service, follow the diagnostic and repair procedures in the 1997 Taurus/Sable Service Manual for the FS-10 compressor. If the VF2 compressor requires replacement, follow the procedure listed below to replace it with an FS-10 compressor (see the Part Return Procedure at the end of this article). Service parts for the VF2 compressor are available through the normal part ordering process. Unique VF2 attaching components are listed below.

VF2 COMPRESSOR IDENTIFICATION





The VF2 compressor is identified with a white part label as shown in Figure 1.

VF2 COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

The VF2 compressor is not available for service.

If the VF2 compressor fails, remove the VF2 compressor, clutch, drive belt, suction hose, suction manifold tube, discharge hose, accumulator and
orifice tube.

CAUTION:
FLUSH THE HEAT EXCHANGERS OR INSTALL A FILTER KIT AS OUTLINED IN THE 1997 TAURUS/SABLE SERVICE MANUAL (GROUP 12-00) OR TSB 96-15-5.





Install the 1997 model FS-10 A/C compressor along with the components listed in the Replacement Parts Chart.

ATTACHING COMPONENT INFORMATION








If one of the following VF2 compressor attaching components has failed, replace it using one of the parts listed in the following Unique Attaching Components For VF2 Chart (Figures 1 and 2). All other components not listed fit both the VF2 and FS-10 systems. These part numbers are also listed in the 1997 Service Parts Catalog.

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS FOR VF2 ATTACHING COMPONENTS

^ Compressor Mounting Bolt - 20-28 N.m (15-21 lb-ft)

^ Replacement Bolt For Discharge Manifold Stud - 20-28 N.m (15-21 lb-ft)

^ Discharge Manifold Nut - 20-28 N.m (15-21 lb-ft)

^ Suction Manifold Bolt - 16-23 N.m (12-17 lb-ft)

^ Suction Line-To-Exhaust Stud Nut - 20-28 N.m (15-21 lb-ft)

NOTE:
ALL SERVICE OPERATIONS ARE THE SAME AS OUTLINED IN THE 1997 TAURUS/SABLE SERVICE MANUAL FOR FS-10 EQUIPPED VEHICLES WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MINOR DIFFERENCES WITH THE HOSE MANIFOLD CONNECTIONS.
