Removal
1. Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL) and the engine air cleaner intake tube.2. Remove the battery and the battery tray for the removal procedures.
3. Remove the transaxle ground strap bolts and remove the transaxle ground straps.
4. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector from the top RH rear corner of the transaxle.
5. Disconnect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch electrical connector from the lower front of the transaxle.
6. Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector from the rear of the transaxle.
7. Disconnect the two clutch tube mounting clips from the lower clutch slave cylinder tube.
8. Remove the two clutch slave cylinder bolts and position the clutch slave cylinder aside.
NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the lower clutch slave cylinder tube from the clutch slave cylinder.
9. Install the Rotunda Three-Bar Engine Support 014-00750 or equivalent to the engine lifting eye.
10. Remove the seven upper transaxle-to-engine bolts.
11. Remove the two upper starter motor bolts.
12. Remove the two fuel filter nuts and position the fuel filter aside.
NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.
13. Remove the two nuts, one bolt, and the through bolt from the LH transaxle support insulator.
14. Raise and support the vehicle.
15. Disconnect the starter S-terminal wire.
16. Remove the starter B-terminal wire nut and disconnect the B-terminal wire.
17. Remove the lower starter motor bolt and remove the starter motor.
18. Remove the transaxle drain-plug
19. Drain the transmission fluid into a suitable container.
20. Discard the drain-plug washer.
21. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
22. Raise the staked portion of the LH and RH front axle wheel hub retainer.
23. Remove and discard the front axle wheel hub retainers.
24. Remove the front fender splash shields.
25. Remove the six crossmember bolts.
26. Lower the crossmember from the vehicle.
27. On vehicles equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), remove the clips from the front anti-lock sensor and bracket. Remove the front anti-lock sensor and bracket nuts from the front anti-lock sensor and bracket harness mount on the LH side of the vehicle.
28. Remove the LH ball joint nut and bolt.
29. Pry the front suspension lower arm down to separate the ball joint from the front wheel knuckle.
30. Pull the lower edge of the front wheel knuckle outward to separate it from the end of the front wheel driveshaft and joint.
31. Use a pry bar to remove the end of the LH front wheel driveshaft and joint from the transaxle. Pry between the transaxle and the front wheel driveshaft and joint. Remove the front wheel driveshaft and joint from the vehicle.
32. Install Transaxle Plugs T88C-7025-AH.
CAUTION: Failure to install Transaxle Plugs T88C-7025-AH may allow the differential side gears to become mispositioned.
33. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
34. Remove the three exhaust inlet pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts from both of the exhaust inlet pipes. Discard the nuts.
35. Lower the exhaust system far enough to gain access to the RH front axle bearing bracket.
36. Remove the three RH front axle bearing bracket bolts.
37. On vehicles equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), remove the clips from the front anti-lock sensor and bracket. Remove the front anti-lock sensor and bracket harness nuts on the RH side of the vehicle.
38. Remove the RH ball joint nut and bolt.
39. Pry the front suspension lower arm down to separate the ball joint from the front wheel knuckle.
40. Pull the lower edge of the front wheel knuckle outward to separate it from the front wheel driveshaft and joint.
41. Pull the front wheel driveshaft and joint from the flywheel housing and install Transaxle Plugs T88C-7025-AH. Remove the front wheel driveshaft and joint from the vehicle.
CAUTION: Failure to install Transaxle Plugs T88C-7025-AH may allow the differential side gears to become mispositioned.
42. Remove the six rear engine support nuts and two bolts. Remove the transmission support crossmember.
43. Remove the control rod to support bar stud nut and disconnect the control rod.
44. Remove the transmission selector shift rod adjustment sleeve.
45. Remove the three rear transaxle support bracket bolts.
46. Use Rotunda Hi-Lift Transmission Jack 014-00942 or equivalent to support the transaxle.
47. Remove the three bolts and the rear transaxle support insulator.
48. Remove the three lower transaxle-to-engine bolts.
49. Separate the transaxle from the engine and lower the transaxle from the vehicle.
