Electronic Control System
DESCRIPTIONThe electronic system controls line pressure, Transaxle shifting, and torque converter lockup by means of solenoid operation. The line pressure solenoid regulates Transaxle line pressure, controls kick down, and optimizes clutch and braking pressure during shifting. The shift solenoids actuate friction elements (clutches and bands) to control shifting in the front planet. The torque converter clutch solenoid minimizes lockup shock and enables the power train to deliver a 1:1 ratio to maximize fuel economy.
OPERATION
^ The Transaxle has two operating modes-POWER and NORMAL when in overdrive range. The mode is determined by the speed at which the accelerator pedal is depressed. The power train control module (PCM) receives a throttle position sensor signal and chooses the correct mode of operation.
^ If the Transaxle is in the POWER mode, the Transaxle will not go into lockup (D range). The POWER mode lengthens the shifting points in the Transaxle. Under normal driving conditions, the PCM will determine the operating mode.
^ The Transaxle is equipped with an over speed protection device. If the gearshift lever is placed in the 2 or 1 range and the vehicle is driven at excessive speeds for that gear, the over speed protection device will upshift the Transaxle to protect it from damage.
