This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the Labor Operation Time.

ISSUE:
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) PO5O5 in memory, but show no driveability concerns on some vehicles. This may be caused by an incorrect idle setting at the assembly plant.

ACTION:
Adjust base idle. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Connect the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester and retrieve the DTC and freeze frame data (obtained using procedure in the 1997 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual, Page 2B-17).

2. Perform diagnostics as per appropriate Pinpoint Test starting at KE-1 in the PC/ED Manual. If problem is found, follow appropriate repairs as indicated by the Pinpoint Test.

3. Perform base idle adjustment as follows:

a. Run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.





b. Locate the MECS connector under the hood located in the LH front corner of the engine compartment near the battery. Place a jumper wire between the STI (TEN) connector and ground (GRD). Refer to Figure 1.

NOTE:
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION VEHICLES SHOULD BE IN PARK, MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES SHOULD BE IN NEUTRAL.

c. Monitor RPM PID using NGS Tester.





d. Adjust base idle (Figure 2). Idle speed should be adjusted to 650 150 rpm for all transmissions. Adjustment of idle screw is clockwise to lower, counterclockwise to raise idle.

e. Remove the jumper wire and verify idle speed is within specifications.

f. Remove NGS Tester.
