Removal
NOTE: On M/T vehicles, the engine is removed with the transaxle attached. The engine and transaxle are lifted from the engine compartment as an assembly.
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
WARNING: FUEL IN THE FUEL SYSTEM REMAINS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING.
2. Remove the battery and battery tray.
3. Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL).
4. Remove the rear transaxle support insulator harness bracket bolt.
5. Raise and support the vehicle.
6. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
7. Remove the front fender splash shields.
8. Remove the six crossmember bolts and the crossmember.
9. Remove the two rear engine support bolts and six nuts from the transmission support crossmember, then remove the transmission support crossmember.
10. Disconnect the front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
11. Remove the three nuts from the front exhaust inlet pipe.
12. Disconnect the rear HO2S electrical connectors.
13. Remove the three nuts from the rear exhaust inlet pipe.
14. Remove the control rod to support bar stud nut.
15. Remove the transmission selector shift rod adjustment sleeve.
16. Disconnect the A/C compressor and the oil pressure switch electrical connectors.
17. Remove the lower clutch slave cylinder tube from the clutch slave cylinder and the two clips from the lower clutch slave cylinder tube.
18. Remove the RH front wheel driveshaft and joint and the LH front wheel driveshaft and joint.
19. Loosen the tensioner locknut on the power steering and water pump drive belt idler pulley.
20. Loosen the tensioner adjuster bolt and remove the drive belt. Remove the three power steering pump bolts through the power steering pump pulley.
21. Remove the power steering pump rear bracket bolt. Use mechanic's wire to tie the power steering pump aside.
22. If equipped, remove the four A/C compressor bolts. Position the A/C compressor aside.
CAUTION: Do not allow the A/C compressor to hang by the refrigerant lines. Use mechanic's wire to secure the A/C compressor after removal.
NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the refrigerant lines from the A/C compressor.
23. Lower the vehicle.
24. Remove the bolt retaining the power steering hose bracket to the power steering pump, located on top of the power steering pump.

25. Loosen the A/C and generator belt idler tensioner locknut.
26. Loosen the tensioner adjusting bolt and remove the drive belt.
27. Use the radiator draincock located on the lower RH side of the radiator to drain the cooling system into a proper container.
28. Disconnect the radiator coolant recovery reservoir overflow hose from the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
29. Loosen the upper radiator hose clamp at the upper water inlet connection and slide the upper radiator hose clamp toward the middle of the upper radiator hose.
30. Remove the upper radiator hose from the upper water inlet connection.
31. Disconnect the electrical connector from each engine cooling fan motor.
32. Loosen the lower radiator hose clamp near the cylinder block, then slide the lower radiator hose clamp toward the middle of the lower radiator hose.
33. Remove the lower radiator hose from the rear water hose connection.
34. Remove the two radiator hold-down bolts.
35. Remove the radiator with the fan shroud, by lifting straight up.
36. Disconnect the generator electrical connectors.
NOTE: Label all of the electrical connectors for ease of installation.
37. Remove the two A/C and generator wiring harness bolts, then disconnect the A/C and generator wiring harness from the front of the cylinder head.
38. Disconnect the two electrical connectors from the top of the distributor.
39. Disconnect the fuel injection supply manifold electrical connectors.
40. If equipped, disconnect the vacuum line from the speed control servo.
41. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
42. Disconnect the starter terminals.
43. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
44. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector and the water temperature indicator sender unit electrical connector from the front water hose connection.
45. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector.
46. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector.
47. Disconnect the EGR valve (EGR valve) and EGR solenoid vacuum valve electrical connectors and vacuum hoses.
48. Disconnect the park/neutral position (PNP) switch.
49. Remove the ground wire bracket-to-rear transaxle support insulator harness bracket bolt located near the starter.
50. Disconnect the idle air control bypass air (IAC BPA) valve electrical connector located below the throttle body.
51. If equipped, remove the two nuts and the one electrical connector from the speed control servo, then position the speed control servo aside.
52. Remove the transaxle ground strap located at the top rear of the transaxle.
53. Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector located at the rear of the transaxle.
54. Disconnect the EGR valve position sensor connector.
55. Remove the heater water hoses from the cylinder block.
56. Remove the fuel supply tube from the fuel injection supply manifold. Discard the copper crush washers.
57. Remove the two fuel tube bracket bolts and the fuel tube bracket.
58. Disconnect the vacuum hose and the return fuel tube from the fuel pressure regulator.
59. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the throttle body.
60. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body.
61. Disconnect the climate control assembly vacuum hose from the intake manifold.
62. Disconnect the brake vacuum booster hose from the power brake booster.
63. Remove the two fuel filter nuts, then position the fuel filter aside.
NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.
64. Disengage any remaining engine wire harness clips. Position the engine wire harness out of the way.
65. Disconnect the oil pressure switch electrical connector.
66. Attach lifting cables to the engine lifting eyes on the engine and remove any slack in the cables.
67. Remove the LH transaxle support insulator nuts and the LH transaxle support insulator through bolt.
68. Remove the three RH engine support insulator nuts and the RH engine support insulator through bolt from the RH engine support insulator, then remove the RH engine support insulator.
69. Lift the engine and transaxle from the vehicle as an assembly.
70. Separate the engine and transaxle.
71. Remove the flywheel.
72. Mount the engine on an engine stand.
73. Remove the lifting cables from the engine lifting eyes.
