Valve Spring: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
NOTE: If the intake valve or valve seat has not been damaged, the valve springs and valve stem seals may be replaced by holding the affected valve against the valve seat using compressed air. Use a compressed air line and an adapter installed in the spark plug hole. A minimum of 965 kPa (140 psi) line pressure is required. If air pressure does not hold the valve shut, the valve is damaged or burnt and the cylinder head must be removed and serviced. The appropriate piston must be at top dead center (TDC) when servicing, to prevent the valves from falling down into the cylinder.

1. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters (HLA) from the cylinder head.
2. Bring the appropriate piston to TDC.
3. Remove the appropriate spark plug. Install an appropriate adapter and apply a minimum of 965 kPa (140 psi) of air pressure to hold the valve shut.

4. Use Valve Spring Compressor Sets T87C-6565-A and T89P-6565-A1 (part of set T89P-6565-A) to compress the valve springs and remove the valve spring retainer keys. Repeat for each valve spring.
5. Remove the upper valve spring retainers, valve springs, and the lower valve spring retainer.

6. Use Impact Slide Hammer T50T-100-A and Valve Stem Seal Remover T89P-6510-D to remove the valve stem seals. Discard the valve stem seals.

INSTALLATION

1. Use Valve Stem Seal Replacer T89P-6510-C to install the new valve stem seals. Install the intake valve stem seals to a depth of 16.3 mm (0.641 inch) and the exhaust valve stem seals to a depth of 13.8 mm (0.54 inch).

The intake and exhaust valve stem seals are different. The exhaust valve stem seal has riches on the top for identification.

CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to install the valve stem seal.

2. Install the lower valve spring retainer.
3. Install the valve spring with the compressed coil end of the valve spring against the lower valve spring retainer.
4. Install the upper valve spring retainer.

5. Use Valve Spring Compressor Sets T87C-6565-A and T89P-6565-A1 (part of Valve Spring Compressor Set T89P-6565-A) to compress the valve spring and install the valve spring retainer keys. Repeat for each valve spring.
6. Tap the end of each valve stem lightly to ensure that the valve spring retainer keys are fully seated.

7. Verify that all valve springs are fully seated against the cylinder head.
8. Remove the adapter and compressed air line being used to hold the valve in its seat. Install the spark plug. Tighten the spark plug to 15-22 Nm (11-16 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the HLAs.
