Removal and Installation

REMOVAL
1. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
2. Remove the front and rear engine front covers.
3. Remove the timing belt.
4. Remove the intake manifold.
5. Remove the valve covers.
6. Remove the camshafts.
7. Remove the timing belt tensioner bolt. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
8. Remove the lower timing belt idler bolt. Remove the lower timing chain belt idler.
9. Remove the two generator-to-generator adjusting arm bolts.

10. Remove the three seal plate bolts and the seal plate.

11. Remove the four front water hose connection bolts and the front water hose connection.
12. Raise and support the vehicle.
13. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (H02S) electrical connectors.
14. Remove the exhaust inlet pipe.
15. If removing the rear cylinder head, remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube and the EGR tube bracket from the EGR valve (EGR valve) and the cylinder head.
16. Lower the vehicle.
17. Remove the HLAs from the cylinder head.

CAUTION: Place the hydraulic lash adjuster (HLA) aside and identify them for installation. If a HLA is to be reused, store it upside down in an oil filled container. Installing the HLAs in the wrong bore may cause faulty HLA operation.

Fig. 10, Cylinder Head Bolt Removal:

18. Remove the cylinder head bolts in two or three steps as shown.
19. Remove the cylinder head(s).
20. Remove and discard the old head gaskets.
21. If necessary, remove the exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold shield from the cylinder head.

INSTALLATION
1. If necessary, install the exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold shield. Use a new exhaust manifold gasket. Tighten the exhaust manifold shield bolts to 8-10 Nm (71-88 inch lbs.). Tighten the exhaust manifold nuts and exhaust manifold bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-18 ft. lbs.).

2. Install new head gaskets on the cylinder block with the identification marks facing up.

NOTE: The rear and front head gaskets are not interchangeable.

3. Install the cylinder heads on the head gaskets.

4. Measure the length of each cylinder head bolt before reinstalling. If the bolt length is longer than 132.5 mm (5.217 in), replace the cylinder head bolt with a new one. Apply clean engine oil to the threads of the cylinder head bolts.

5. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in three steps in the sequence shown below to 23-26 Nm (17-19 ft. lbs.).
6. Put a paint mark on the top edge of each head bolt head.
7. Using the marks as a reference, further tighten the cylinder head bolts by turning them 90 +/- 5 degrees.

8. Tighten the bolts again by turning them an additional 90 +/- degrees.
9. Apply clean engine oil to the HLA friction surfaces.
10. Install the HLAs into the bore from which they were removed.
11. Verify that the HLAs move freely in their bores.
12. Install the seal and seal plate bolts. Tighten the seal plate bolts to 8-10 Nm (71-88 inch lbs.).
13. Install the front water hose connection and four bolts. Tighten the four front water hose connection bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-18 ft. lbs.).
14. Install the two generator-to-generator adjusting arm bolts. Tighten the generator-to-generator adjusting arm bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-18 ft. lbs.).
15. Install the lower timing belt idler and the lower timing belt idler bolt. Tighten the lower timing belt idler bolt to 38-51 Nm (28-38 ft. lbs.).
16. Install the timing belt tensioner and timing belt tensioner bolt. Tighten the timing belt tensioner bolt to 35-41 Nm (26-37 ft. lbs.).
17. Install the camshafts.
18. Raise and support the vehicle.
19. If installing the rear cylinder head, install the EGR tube and EGR tube bracket.
20. Install the exhaust inlet pipes.
21. Connect the two H02S electrical connectors.
22. Lower the vehicle.
23. Install the valve cover.
24. Install the intake manifold.
25. Install the timing belt.
26. Install the front and rear engine front covers.
27. Refill with engine coolant.
