Piston: Service and Repair

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove the connecting rod bearings from the connecting rod and connecting rod cap.

2. Check the connecting rod oscillation torque. Grasp the piston and pull the connecting rod as far up as possible. Let go of the connecting rod. If the connecting rod does not drop by its own weight, replace the piston.
3. If the connecting rod oscillating torque is satisfactory, mark the piston and the connecting rod for proper installation.

4. Use Piston Pin TOOL D81L-6135-A or equivalent and a hydraulic press to remove the piston pins.

CAUTION: While removing the piston pin, note the pressing pressure. If the pressure is less than 4,905 N (1,100 lb), replace the piston or the connecting rod.

ASSEMBLY
NOTE: If a new piston is to be used, check the clearance of the piston to the cylinder block bore before assembling the piston and piston pin to the connecting rod.

1. Apply a light coat of engine oil to all parts.

2. Use Piston Pin Tool D81L-6135-A or equivalent to assemble the piston to the connecting rod.

NOTE: Verify that the piston floats during assembly.

3. Check the connecting rod oscillating torque. The connecting rod should fall under its own weight.
4. Make sure the connecting rod bearings, the connecting rod bearing bore, and the connecting rod cap bearing bore are clean.

CAUTION: Foreign material under the inserts will distort the bearing and cause a failure.

5. Install the connecting rod bearings in the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap with the bearing tangs fitting in the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap slots.
