Synchronizer Hub: Testing and Inspection
BLOCKING RINGCheck the synchronizer blocking ring for:
^ Engagement with the gear. The ring must engage smoothly with the gear.
^ Worn or damaged teeth or tapered surface.
^ Clearance from the side of gear. Press the synchronizer blocking ring uniformly against the gear and measure around the circumference.
Standard clearance is 1.5 mm (0.059 inch).
Minimum allowable clearance is 0.8 mm (0.031 inch).
SYNCHRONIZER
Check the synchronizer for:
^ Worn or damaged splines, synchronizer insert groove, or end surface.
^ Check for the smooth movement of the synchronizer sleeve when it is installed on the synchronizer hub.
FIFTH SPEED CLUSTER GEAR SLEEVE
Check the fifth speed cluster gear sleeve for:
^ Worn or damaged splines.
^ Gear diameter. The gear diameter should be 33.945-33.970 mm (1.3364-1.3374 inches).
SYNCHRONIZER SLEEVE
Check the synchronizer sleeve for:
^ Worn or damaged splines or sleeve fork groove.
^ Excessive clearance between the synchronizer sleeve and the gear shifter fork.
INSERTS & SPRINGS
Check the synchronizer inserts and springs for:
^ Worn synchronizer hub insert.
^ Bent synchronizer blocking spring.
