Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
INSPECTION AND VERIFICATIONSteering system complaints usually relate to excessive steering effort or handling problems. Excessive steering effort can be caused by:
^ Underinflated tires.
^ Worn or damaged suspension components.
^ Excessive friction in the steering linkage, caused by:
a. Improper lubrication
b. Impaired seals allowing moisture and contaminants to enter
c. Improper adjustment of steering system components.
Handling problems include the following:
^ Pulls to one side or wanders
^ Failure to return to the straight ahead position when the steering wheel is released
^ Loose feeling in steering.
All of these can be attributed to problems in the:
^ Steering gear.
^ Power steering pump plate and bushing.
^ Suspension components.
^ Wheels and tires.
Steering system concerns may also occur in the steering column. If the steering column is suspected perform the following:
1. Verify the customer concern by road testing the vehicle to duplicate the concern.
2. Visually inspect the following components of the steering column.
^ Binding steering column shrouds.
^ Bearing damage.
^ Steering system concern.
^ Loose fittings.
3. If the fault is not visually evident, determine the symptom and proceed to diagnosis by symptom. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
