Turning Effort
Perform the following steps to check the power steering effort:1. Start the engine.
2. Place a thermometer in the power steering pump reservoir.
CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for more than fifteen seconds at a time.
3. Turn the steering wheel fully left and fully right several times to raise the fluid temperature to 50-60°C (122-140°F).
4. With the vehicle on a hard, level surface, turn the steering wheel until the wheels are in the straight ahead position.
NOTE: For accurate readings, always pull the scale in the direction the point of the scale attachment is moving (tangential to the wheel rim) through the full circle.
5. Attach Spring Scale T74P-3504-Y to the steering wheel rim and measure the steering effort through one full turn of the steering wheel. The steering wheel effort should be 28-29 N (6.29-6.51 lbs.) or less.
6. If the effort is greater than the specification, check the fluid level for fluid leakage, power steering pump pressure, steering gear pressure, tire pressure, or for air in the system.
7. Remove the thermometer.
