Starter Drive and Flywheel Ring Gear

1. Inspect the wear pattern on the starter drive and the flywheel ring gear.
2. Inspect the entire circumference of the flywheel ring gear for damage if the starter drive teeth are damaged. The flywheel ring gear pattern will usually be found in two places around the ring gear. If the starter drive or flywheel ring gear show signs of excessive wear or milling, they must be replaced.

3. Turn the starter drive by hand and hold the overrunning clutch. Replace the starter drive if the pinion turns in both directions or does not turn.

CAUTION: The overrunning clutch is packed with grease and sealed, and should not be washed in solvent.
