Spring Lock Coupling

CAUTION: Be sure that the refrigerant system has been discharged into a proper recovery system before disconnecting a A/C tube lock coupling. Discharging and Recovery

SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED

Description Model
Spring Lock Coupling Disconnect Tool (3/8 in.) T81P-19623-G1
Spring Lock Coupling Disconnect Tool (1/2 in.) T81P-19623-G2
Spring Lock Coupling Disconnect Tool (5/8 in.) T81P-19623-C
Spring Lock Coupling Disconnect Tool (1/2 in.) T81P-19623-A

DISCONNECT

1. Fit the spring lock coupling disconnect tool to the spring lock coupling so that the spring lock coupling tool can enter the cage opening to release the A/C tube lock coupling spring.

CAUTION: Discharge the system before disconnecting the coupling.

2. Push the tool into the cage opening to release the female fitting from the A/C tube lock coupling spring.

3. Pull the spring lock coupling fittings apart.

4. Remove the tool from the disconnected spring lock coupling.

CONNECT

1. Check for a missing or damaged A/C tube lock coupling spring. A damaged A/C tube lock coupling spring can be removed with a small hooked wire. Install a new A/C tube lock coupling spring if the old one is damaged or missing.
2. Clean the fittings.

3. On the female spring lock coupling design, check the inside of each fitting for scratches, corrosion or debris from deteriorated O-rings. If scratches, corrosion or debris are found, the fitting should be cleaned as follows:
a. Remove any surface residue from the inside of the female spring lock coupling by polishing with 400-grit emery cloth (or equivalent). Polish the female surface by using a twisting motion so that any scratches made will not cross the O-ring sealing surface.
b. Perform additional polishing of surface using 600-grit emery cloth or equivalent.
c. All residue from the polishing operations should be removed from the fitting by wiping with a lint-free cloth.

4. Remove the O-ring seals from the male fining using Plastic O-ring Tool F5VH-17B017-AA or equivalent. Do not use a metal O-ring tool. They could cause axial scratches across the O-ring grooves resulting in refrigerant leakage.
5. Lubricate with Motorcraft Refrigerant Oil YN-12b or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSN-M1C231-B. Install new O-ring seals on male fitting.

Use only the specified O-ring seals because they are made of a special material. The use of any O-ring seal other than the one specified may allow the connection to leak intermittently during vehicle operation. Refer to service parts list.
6. Lubricate male fitting and Oring seals and inside of female fining with clean Motorcraft Refrigerant Oil YN-12b or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSN-M1C231-B.
7. Install plastic indicator ring into cage opening if indicator ring is to be used.
8. Fit female fitting to male fitting and push with a twisting motion until garter spring snaps over flared end of female fitting.

NOTE: If plastic indicator ring is used, it will snap out of cage opening when coupling is connected to indicate engagement.

9. If indicator ring is not used, check coupling engagement by making sure the garter spring is over flared end of female fitting.
