Affected Vehicles and Inspection

TIMING BELT TENSIONER INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
1997 PROBE EQUIPPED WITH 2.0L ENGINE

INSPECTION

1. Install memory saver, then disconnect battery negative cable.





2. Unplug ignition wires from spark plugs, then position wires away from valve cover. Refer to Figure 1.

3. Disconnect power steering pressure switch electrical connector. Refer to Figure 1.

4. Remove power steering pressure switch wiring harness from power steering hose routing clips. Refer to Figure 1.

5. Remove engine oil dipstick.

6. Remove retaining bolts from two (2) power steering hose routing brackets, then position power steering hose away from valve cover. Refer to Figure 1.

7. Disconnect and remove ventilation hose and PCV valve. See Figure 1.





8. Remove valve cover retaining bolts in two (2) steps, in sequence shown in Figure 2.

9. Remove valve cover.





10. Remove upper timing belt cover. See Figure 3.

11. Inspect timing belt tensioner as follows:





^ Using mini flashlight, shine light down between engine mount and timing belt tensioner spring. See Figure 4.





^ Locate base of timing belt tensioner. Look down between cam sprockets to see tensioner base clearly. Refer to Figure 5.





^ Check tensioner for locking tabs. See Figures 5 and 6.

^ If locking tabs are present on tensioner, replace timing belt tensioner as outlined in the included "Service Procedure."

^ If locking tabs are not present, no further service action is required. Proceed to Step 31 of the Service Procedure to assemble vehicle.
