Engine Lubrication: Description and Operation

(Part 1 Of 2):

(Part 2 Of 2):

The engine lubrication system and the lubrication components are designed for lubrication efficiency and engine noise reduction. The oil pump is bolted to the front of the cylinder block and is crankshaft-driven. Engine oil is pulled from the oil pan through the oil pump screen cover and tube. The oil pump then sends the oil to the oil filter, where it is directed back to the cylinder heads and cylinder block. Piston cooling oil jets, located at the bottom of the cylinders, aid in cooling and lubrication by spraying the underside of the pistons. The oil then drains through the stiffener into the oil pan. The cast aluminum stiffener is designed to bolt to the cylinder block and transaxle in order to reduce powertrain twisting.
