Engine: Description and Operation
This engine incorporate a closed-type positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system and exhaust emission control system. To maintain the required exhaust emission levels, the fuel system, ignition system, and engine must be kept in good operating condition and meet recommended adjustment specifications.
Make sure the part(s) are not serviceable before replacing damaged or worn engine components such as the following:
^ Crankshaft
^ Cylinder Heads
^ Valve Guides
^ Valves
^ Camshafts
^ Cylinder Block
WARNING: TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, DO NOT OPERATE THE ENGINE WITH THE HOOD OPEN UNTIL THE FAN HAS FIRST BEEN EXAMINED FOR POSSIBLE CRACKS AND SEPARATION.
The 2.0L (121.5 CID) Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine is an overhead twin cam design that utilizes 16 valves. Hydraulic lash adjusters (HLA) are used between the valve stem and the camshaft to reduce noise and to provide maintenance-free valve clearance. The combustion chamber is pent-roof style with a centrally located spark plug for cylinder head compactness and improved combustion efficiency. A stiffener, located between the cylinder block and oil pan produces a rigid cylinder block to reduce vibration.
