Valve Spring: Service and Repair
NOTE: The appropriate piston must be at TDC when removing the valves springs to prevent the valves from falling down into the cylinder. If the valve or valve seat has not been damaged, the valve springs, valve stem seals and valve spring retainer may be replaced by using compressed air to hold the affected valve against its valve seat. Use a compressed air line and an adapter installed in the spark plug hole. A minimum of 965 kPa (140 psi) line pressure is required. If air pressure does not hold the valve shut, the valve is damaged or burnt, and the cylinder head must be removed and serviced.REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the valve cover.
3. Remove the engine front covers.
4. Remove the timing belts.
5. Remove the camshaft sprockets.
6. Remove the camshafts.
7. Remove the Hydraulic Lash Adjusters (HLAs) from the cylinder head.
NOTE: Number each of the HLA during removal if any are to be reused. Use a paint marker or equivalent.
8. Bring the appropriate piston to TDC.
9. Remove the appropriate spark plug and install an adapter. Apply a minimum of 965 kPa (140 psi) of compressed air.
10. Install Valve Spring Compressor Brackets T89P-6565-A2 (part of T89P-6565-A) and bolts onto the appropriate camshaft cap bolt holes on the cylinder head.
11. Install Valve Spring Compressor Bar (part of T87C-6565-A) through Valve Spring Compressor T89P-6565-A1 (part of T89P-6565-A) and install the assembly onto the brackets.
12. Install a 1/2-inch drive socket handle onto the valve spring compressor.
13. Align the spring compressor squarely over the valve spring retainer.
14. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys with a magnet.
15. Release the valve spring compressor and remove the upper valve spring retainer, valve spring and the lower valve spring retainer.
16. Assemble Valve Stem Seal Remover T89P-6510-D and Impact Slide Hammer T59L-100-B and remove the valve stem seal.
17. Discard the valve stem seals.
INSTALLATION
1. Slide the valve stem seal onto the valve guide.
NOTE: The intake and exhaust valve stem seals are different. The exhaust valve stem seal has ridges on the top for identification.
2. Use Valve Stem Seal Replacer T9OP-6510-AH to install the valve stem seal. Press the valve stem seal on until the seal replacer contacts the cylinder head.
3. Install the lower valve spring retainer.
4. Install the valve spring with the compressed coil end of the valve spring going into the cylinder head first.
5. Install the upper valve spring retainer.
6. Compress the valve spring with Valve Spring Compressor T89P-6565-A1 (part of T89P-6565-A) and install the valve spring retainer keys.
7. Release the pressure from the Valve Spring Compressor T89P-6565-A 1 (part of T89P-6565-A). Tap the end of the valve stem lightly two or three times with a plastic hammer to verify that the valve spring retainer keys are fully seated.
8. Remove the Valve Spring Compressor Bar (part of T87C-6565-A), the Valve Spring Compressor T89P-6565-A1 (part of T89P-6565-A) and the Valve Spring Compressor Brackets T89P-6565-A2 (part of T89P-6565-A) from the cylinder head.
9. Remove the adapter and the compressed air line being used to hold the valve in its seat.
10. Install the HLAs in the position noted during removal.
11. Install the camshafts.
12. Install the camshaft sprockets.
13. Install the timing belts.
14. Install the engine front covers.
15. Install the valve cover.
16. Connect the battery ground cable.
