Disassembly and Assembly
DISASSEMBLY1. Remove the camshafts.
2. Remove the cylinder head.
3. Remove the intake manifold.
4. Remove the spark plugs.
5. Remove the HLAs from the cylinder head.
NOTE: Mark the position of the hydraulic lash adjusters (HLA) during removal if any are to be reused.
6. Install Valve Spring Compressor Brackets T89P-6565-A2 (part of T89P-6565-A) and bolts onto the necessary camshaft bearing cap bolt holes on the cylinder head.
7. Install Valve Spring Compressor Bar (part of T87C-6565-A) through Valve Spring Compressor T89P-6565-A1 (part of T89P-6565-A) and install the assembly onto the brackets.
8. Install a 1/2-inch drive socket handle onto the spring compressor.
9. Align the spring compressor squarely over the valve spring retainer.
10. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys with a magnet.
11. Release the spring compressor and remove the upper valve spring retainer, valve spring, lower valve spring retainer and valve.
12. Assemble Valve Stem Seal Remover T89P-651O-D and Impact Slide Hammer T59L-1OO-B and remove the valve stem seal. Discard the valve stem seal.
13. Drive out the valve guide from below the cylinder head with Valve Guide Remover/Replacer T89P-6510-A.
ASSEMBLY
1. Install Valve Guide Replacer T92C-651O-CH onto Valve Guide Remover T89P-651O-A and install the valve guide.
2. Slide the valve stem seal onto the valve guide.
NOTE: The intake and exhaust valve stem seals are different. The exhaust valve stem seal has ridges on the top for identification.
3. Use Valve Stem Seal Replacer T9OP-6510-AH and press the valve stem seal on until the seal replacer contacts the cylinder head.
4. Install the valves into the cylinder head.
5. Install the lower valve spring retainers.
6. Install the valve springs with the compressed coil end of the valve spring facing into the cylinder head.
7. Install the upper valve spring retainers.
8. Install Valve Spring Compressor Brackets T89P-6565-A2 (part of T89P-6565-A) and attaching bolts onto the necessary camshaft bearing cap bolt holes on the cylinder head.
9. Install Valve Spring Compressor Bar (part of T87C-6565-A) through Valve Spring Compressor T89P-6565-A1 (part of T89P-6565-A) and install the assembly onto the brackets.
10. Install a 1/2-inch drive socket handle onto the spring compressor.
11. Align the spring compressor squarely over the upper valve spring retainer.
12. Compress the valve spring and install the valve spring retainer keys.
13. Release the pressure from Valve Spring Compressor T89P-6565-A2 (part of T89P-6565-A) and tap the end of the valve stem lightly two or three times with a plastic hammer to verify that the valve spring retainer keys are fully seated.
14. Coat the friction surfaces of the HLAs with clean engine oil and install the HLAs in the order noted during removal.
15. Install the camshafts.
CAUTION: Ensure that none of the camshaft lobes are located directly on the hydraulic lash adjusters. Because there is little camshaft thrust clearance, the camshaft must be held horizontally while it is installed. Otherwise, excessive force will be applied to the thrust area, causing burr on the thrust receiving area of the cylinder head journal.
16. If necessary, install the intake manifold.
17. Install the spark plugs and tighten the spark plugs to 15-23 Nm (11-17 ft. lbs.).
18. If the cylinder head bolt length is longer than 105.5 mm (4 inches) then replace the cylinder head bolt with a new one.
Install the cylinder head.
NOTE: Measure the length of each cylinder head bolt before reinstalling.
